Rise of the Guardians has been getting a bad rap lately, to the point that it was even blamed as one of the catalysts for massive write down and layoffs that DreamWorks had to take recently. Much of the blame was not unwarranted, as Guardians performed poorly at the box office. However, it seems to be getting a second wind and is starting to reveal itself at the home entertainment charts.
HV sales charts (to March 17) reveal that Guardians releases—distributed by Paramount Home—came in first ahead of 20th Century Fox’s much-lauded vfx showpiece Life of Pi in both the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert (overall disc sales) and Nielsen’s dedicated Blu-ray charts. Pi took the number two slot in both rankings.
The Nielsen data shows Pi sold 69.2 percent as many discs as Guardians. The Hollywood Reporter points out that the DWA fantasy also earned a number two debut on Home Media Magazine’s rental chart for the week, behind MGM’s Bond blockbuster Skyfall.
