Sanrio’s American Branch Plans Hello Kitty Film Project

Sanrio has recently announced that their new American subsidiary, Sanrio Media & Pictures Entertainment, will be producing a new Hello Kitty film, with target date penciled in for 2019.

The project has a budget of 20 to 30 billion yen (roughly equivalent to 160 – 240 million USD), which is a lot higher than Sanrio’s typical budget for films and animated works in Japan, usually costing several hundred million yen.

The American branch of Sanrio was launched last June 23 with the goal of creating Sanrio projects that are on par with films made in Hollywood. Its main focus will be on projects based on or related to characters from Sanrio, but may also tackle projects based on characters from other companies.
