While most Sonic the Hedgehog fans are already eagerly anticipating the release of Sonic Mania on August 15, SEGA and developers Headcannon and Pagoda West have gone the distance and unveiled yet another reason for us fans to fall even more in love with this new 2D installment in the Sonic franchise: a retro-inspired, fully animated opening sequence. You can check it out below:
The animated opening scene is directed and animated by Tyson Hesse, with custom music by chiptune group Hyper Potions. For the uninitiated, Sonic Mania is well-beloved by long time Sonic the Hedgehog fans as it is a return to form for the franchise, being that it uses 2D pixel art as opposed to a 3D engine like many of the recent Sonic games. The game is launching as part of a two-pronged revitalization of the property, alongside a conventional 3D platformer, titled Sonic Forces.
Sonic Mania will have a multiplatform launch, with the Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox One, and Windows all getting their respective ports.
