Sony Pictures Entertainment and MRC have recently signed a partnership agreement that will have both companies sharing production and financing duties for the upcoming film Chappie, which comes from the fertile mind of District 9 writer-director Neil Blomkamp. The announcement was made by Columbia Pictures president Doug Belgrad and President of Production Hannah Minghela. Sony Pictures will serve as marketer and distributor worldwide.
Chappie’s screenplay was written by Blomkamp and Terri Hatchell, and focuses on a robot with true artificial intelligence, who was stolen by a couple of local gangsters seeking to use him for their own criminal activities. The voice cast includes Sharlto Copley as chappie, and Ninja and Yolandi Visser of rap-rave duoe Die Antwoord as the voice of the two gangsters.
“We’re huge fans of Neill Blomkamp – it’s a real thrill to be continuing our relationship with such a visionary and important filmmaker. Neill has proven that he is a true original voice and we expect that Chappie will strike a chord with worldwide audiences in the same way that District 9 and Elysium have. We love the script he and Terri have written and we’re looking forward to working again with our friends at MRC,” says Belgrad.
