The ’90s mega-hit pop group the Spice Girls are coming back in a way you might not expect. Variety is reporting that all five members of the British band, Victoria Beckham, Melanie Brown, Emma Bunton, Melanie Chisholm, and Geri Halliwell have agreed to lend their voices and likeness for an animated super hero film in development. Each of the girls will have a unique ability that reflects their personality.
Little else is known about the project, though Variety’s source says the girls have big plans in mind. “The Spice Girls are thinking big in terms of a franchise on a global scale. They’re the most successful girl group on the planet. It’s just what Marvel or Disney needs.”
Since uniting in 1994, the Spice Girls 85 million records and in 1998 achieved the highest ever annual earnings by an all-female group with $49 million USD. The year prior, the group starred in their own live action film, Spice World, which grossed over $100 million at the global box office, but wasn’t much of a hit with critics. Our header image is from the video game adaptation of that film.
There’s no shortage of superheroes nowadays and we even know a female group that has a bit of spice. Hopefully no one considers the Spice Girls a wannabe.
