The 2004 CG-animated movie Spookley the Square Pumpkin is getting a followup fifteen years later. The original creative team and cast from the Halloween-themed cable TV favourite have reunited to produce the new animated holiday musical special, Spookley and the Christmas Kittens headed to Disney Channel and Disney Junior next month. The 45-minute special is inspired by the book The Legend of Mistletoe and the Christmas Kittens, which was written by Spookley creator Joe Troiano.
Produced by Holiday Hill Enterprises and K6 Media, the adventure follows Spookley and Mistletoe who encounter three stray kittens for whom they must brave a raging winter storm to find a home. The special features all-new music and improved animation.
The creators were determined that the new Christmas special reflect the tonality and sensibilities of the original. “It was truly an honour to work again with this incredibly talented cast and crew, and with the insightful and enthusiastic team at Disney, to help make Spookley a multi-holiday ambassador,” said Spookley creator and scriptwriter Joe Troiano. Director Bernie Denk says, “As a writer and lyricist, Joe has a uniquely unified vision and it was great to have the opportunity to collaborate with him again and reunite with the extraordinary creative team in Montreal.”
The hope is that the new special will revive the Spookley brand. Holiday Hill is working with Scholastic on a new Halloween-themed book set for fall 2020. The company has also partnered with Milwaukee-based theatre company First Stage to develop a stage show inspired by the original feature.
Spookley and the Christmas Kittens premieres December 6th at 7PM ET on the Disney Junior channel. After the linear broadcasts, the special be available for download on Amazon Prime Video, Apple iTunes and Google Play, with a rollout on Netflix set for 2020. A new Spookley production is set to be released in 2021.
