Studio Ghibli Catalog Home Entertainment Rights Secured by GKIDS

Independent entertainment producer and distributor GKIDS has hit a homerun recently, as they managed to ink a partnership deal with legendary Japanese animation company Studio Ghibli. Under the deal, the distributor will handle Studio Ghibli’s rich catalog of animated content for the North American region.

Fans will get to enjoy the fruits of the partnership starting on October 17, 2017, as GKIDS will start by reissueing six new Blu-Ray and DVD editions of award-winning Studio Ghibli films such as Howl’s Moving Castle, Kiki’s Delivery Service, My Neighbor Totoro, Ponyo, Princess Mononoke, and Spirited Away. This is subsequently followed in October 31, 2017 by the release of Castle in the Sky and Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind.

While the home entertainment deal is great news, it is hardly the first one as Studio Ghibli and GKIDS has enjoyed a healthy partnership since 2010, with GKIDS being in charge of theatrical rights for the Studio Ghibli catalog. The acquisition of home entertainment rights is a natural extension of this relationship, and one that fans can only benefit from.

“GKIDS is absolutely thrilled and honored to be the home of the treasured Studio Ghibli catalog,” says GKIDS CEO Eric Beckman. “These are among my favorite films of all time and we are more than excited to be able to introduce these films to new audiences.”
