Terry Pratchett's The Duel Gets Animated Adaptation

Irish studio Animation Hub is currently developing an animated feature based on famous fantasy and sci-fi author Terry Pratchett’s best selling book, The Duel. A collaboration between the Irish School of Animation at Ballyfermot College of Further Education, Trinity College Dublin’s Creative Arts, Technology and Culture initiative and the Irish animation studio Giant Creative, Animation Hub aims to provide students with the opportunity to work on a big name commercial project in a professional environment. Its last project was the award-winning short The Last Train.

The Duel is set in the Unseen University of Pratchett’s Discworld – which is the main setting for a number of the author’s fantasy novels – and will blend fantasy and reality while featuring an animated version of famous Irish landmarks.

“The Duel is something new from something old – Discworld is being borrowed by our students in the Animation Hub to produce a wholly new adventure – where some familiar elements from our world will appear, but not quite as we know them. It’s wonderful to see this type of project supported and made real – and we intend to have a lot of fun while we’re at it,” says Pratchett, who is an adjunct professor of English at Trinity is working with Giant Creative on the character and story development.

The Duel gets funding from the Irish Film Board, Trinity College Dublin, and Ballyfermot College of Further Education and is scheduled to premiere in early 2013, as part of the Tercentenary Celebrations of Trinity College’s Old Library.

As a huge Terry Pratchett fan I’m really interested by this. And unsurprised that even Discworld books that don’t actually exist (as he says, “The Duel” is an original animation) are bestsellers.
