Die Biene Maja (Maya the Bee) (GERMANY)

Germany's Die Biene Maja (Maya the Bee)

Die Biene Maja (Maya the Bee) is an animated series for children from the story of Waldemar Bonsels. The story centres on Maya, an inquisitive, adventurous and somewhat flighty young honeybee, and her adventures in the forest around her. Maya is a bee born in a bee hive during internal unrest: the hive is dividing itself into two new colonies. Maya is raised by her teacher, Mrs. Cassandra. Despite Mrs. Cassandra’s warnings, Maya wants to explore the wide world and commits the unforgivable crime of leaving the hive. During her adventures, Maya, now in exile, befriends other insects and braves dangers with them. In the last two episodes of the series, Maya is taken prisoner by hornets, the bees’ sworn enemies. Prisoner of the hornets, Maya learns of a hornet plan to attack her native hive. Maya is faced with the decision to either return to hive and suffer her due punishment, saving the hive, or leaving the plan unannounced, saving herself but destroying the hive. As may be expected, Maya, after severe pondering, makes the decision to return. In the hive, she announces the coming attack and is, totally unexpectedly, pardoned. The forewarned bees triumph over the hornet attack force. Maya, now a heroine of the hive, becomes a teacher, like Mrs. Cassandra and shares her experiences and wisdom with the future generation.

For the television version, several characters were created, which occurred in Bonsels’ book presentation “Maya the Bee and her adventures”, from the year 1912, not including Willi and Flip. Maya the Bee was a classic in children’s programs and innumerable times again. Their adventures appeared on a radio plays, cassettes, and vinyl LPs. The 25th Birthday broadcast in September 2001, a long night with Maya the Bee, played 17 episodes in a row. The famous German title song, “In an unknown country, in not too long ago, was a well-known bee …” has Karel Gott singing.

Maya (Voiced by Scarlet Lubowski) Maya is an adventurous and curious bee who enjoys life and wants to have fun. Only in the beginning, she is a bit shy and does not hatch from the same comb, but then she gets to fly and wants to learn about the world.

Willy (Voiced by Storeck Eberhard) A young drone (male bee), Willy, who is Maya’s best friend, always tired, hungry, skeptical, also somewhat of a coward but generally good-natured. Willy is prone to jealousy when Maya’s attentions turn to others. He is often reluctantly dragged into adventures by Maya. He is lazy, cowardly and greedy, and complains incessantly, but is still a great sympathetic figure.

Flip Flip is a wise, top-hatted grasshopper, effectively a father-figure for Maya and Willy. He is much more relaxed than Willy.

Miss Cassandra She is Maya’s teacher and chief authority figure, who Maya goes to for advise and counsel.

Zeke’s Pad (AUSTRALIA)

Zeke's Pad

Zeke’s Pad is an animated TV show produced by Bardel Entertainment and Leaping Lizard Productions. It is about the adventures of a 14-year old skateboarder and artist named Zeke who owns a magic electronic pad that brings life to anything he draws on it. Zeke Palmer is an imaginative artist and skateboarder who lives with a weird and wacky family. His Pad is an amazing electronic gadget that is a mobile phone, PDA, GPS, MP3 player and a drawing tablet all rolled into one. Zeke’s pad has a unique glitch: anything he draws comes to life. Being a creative artist that he is, Zeke is constantly drawing and making his drawings come to life. But he learns that for every action there is a reaction, and things don’t turn out the way he imagines.

Zeke (Ezekiel) Palmer (Voiced by Michael Adamthwaite): Zeke Palmer is a talented and creative 14 year-old artist/skateboarder. He follows his own path, however wiggly and weird it might become. Most importantly, Zeke is a risk taker. He is totally into making his ideas happen, but he is also inherently short sighted. The term action equals reaction is something he is blind to. Because of his over-enthusiasm about his own creative ideas, Zeke must deal with the consequences of his actions.

Jay (Jayden) Fritter (Voiced by Tim Hamaguchi): Jay is Zeke’s best friend. Jay’s computer knowledge and technical wizardry often help Zeke out of a jam. Jay is the only person who knows about the special power of Zeke’s Pad.

Rachel Palmer (Voiced by Chiara Zanni): She is Zeke’s annoying 13 year-old sister who is a drama queen, turning every moment into a gripping monologue, all for her love of the theatre.

Ike (Isacc) Palmer (Voiced by Trevor Devall): Zeke’s 17 year-old brother is a star athlete who is all about training. He tries one weird training and diet program after another to obtain peak physical fitness.

Ida Palmer (Voiced by Tabitha St. Germain): Zeke’s mom is a quick change artist with panache, whether she is in stripes refereeing a sibling squabble or leading a cleaning inspection in her white lab coat. Organization and order is the order of the day.

Alvin Palmer (Voiced by Trevor Devall): Zeke’s dad has two true loves, music and his wife Ida. He lives with his head in a musical cloud and depends on Ida to manage the rest.
Maxine Marx (Voiced by Tabitha St. Germain): The old adage “opposites attract” works well for Maxine and Zeke. Pretty, smart and super athletic, she is Zeke’s secret crush.

I am a Big Fan of all types of animation. Like a lot of things, the cream always rises to the top. My favorites have included Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Rebels, anything Pixar, Phineas and Ferb, Voltron Legendary Defender, and the DC/WB Animated Films. I have a lot of Old School favorites as well, such as Star Blazers, Voltron, Looney Toons, Tom & Jerry, and Scooby Doo.
