DreamWorks Animation has recently revealed that Ryan Reynolds (Green Lantern, X-men: Origins) will headline their upcoming animated film about garden snails and racecars, Turbo. Reynolds joins an all star celebrity cast that includes Paul Giamatti, Michael Pena, Luis Guzman, Bill Hader, Richard Jenkins, Ken Jeong, Michelle Rodriguez, Maya Rudolph, Ben Schwartz, Kurtwood Smith, Snoop Dogg and Samuel L. Jackson.
Scheduled for release on July 19, 2013, Turbo tells the story of an ordinary garden snail named Turbo (voiced by Reynolds), who is uncharacteristically obsessed with speed and dreams of becoming the greatest racer in the world, very much like his hero, 5-time Indianapolis 500 champ, Guy Gagne. The snail’s unorthodox ambition naturally makes him an outcast of snail society and an embarrassment to his family. Turbo’s life takes an interesting turn when a freak accident gives the snail the ability to pick up speed, which he naturally uses to pursue his dream: To race against the best that IndyCar has to offer.
David Soren (Merry Madagascar) will direct the movie from a script that he is co-writing with Robert Siegel (The Wrestler) and Darren Lemke (Shrek Forever After). Lisa Stewart (Monsters vs. Aliens, Almost Famous) is producing with Susan Rogers serving as co-producer.
