Warner Preps New Movie Based on Minecraft
Warner Bros. is looking to bring yet another popular franchise to the big screen. This time around, it’s the mega successful sandbox game, Minecraft. The news is not exactly surprising, given that the project was already announced back in 2014. It was already scheduled for a 2019 release, but production seems to have stalled a little bit. And now it’s been given a new release date, March 4, 2022.
There are no other details revealed, aside from the writer and director. Both roles will be filled in by Peter Sollet, whose past credits include Raising Victor Vargas and Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playslist.
For the uninitiated, Minecraft allows players to explore and build massive worlds, ranging from simple cabins to elaborate castles. The game is so open-ended and expansive that players have learned how to build all sorts of unintended things, including complex machines and sprawling megalopolises. The franchise is successful enough to spawn a story-driven game and tons of merchandise, including, appropriately enough, LEGO and minifigs.
