WATCH: Extended Supernatural crossover with Scooby Doo Trailer

This week’s episode of Supernatural will have some jinkies. The Winchester brothers get sucked inside a television and meet the lovable Scooby-Doo and the Mystery Inc. gang as they’re hot on the trails of another bad guy, but this one’s not like the usual. The episode, dubbed “Scoobynatural” will air Thursday at 8/7c on The CW and will be available the next day on The CW App. Here’s the extended trailer:

“Scoobynatural” has been in development since November 2016. That’s when Warner Bros. Animation’s Jeremy Adams brought the idea of a crossover to Supernatural executive producer Andrew Dabb. Both Scooby and Supernatural are Warner Bros. owned productions. When the series got its 13th season renewal the following January, Jim Krieg and Adams started writing the script and were finished by early spring, with the Supernatural cast of Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki and Misha Collins recording their lines in April 2017. At that point, the crew had only seen the animation animatics, with the rough cut coming that summer. It would take until January of this year for the episode’s animation to be finalized. The live action portion of the episode was directed by Robert Singer.

At last week’s PaleyFest in Los Angeles, Ackles stated the voice acting experience was different than his other work because they recorded the episode together. “There was an instant energy that was different than anything we had done before because the three of us had never sat in a recording studio together. Obviously, we work together a lot, but we’d never been in that situation. And it’s animation, so you know you’ve got to go a little bigger. So over-enunciating words and singing life into words is certainly different than what we normally do.” He said the crew were recording a lot of video during their recording session, so fans should expect to see a bonus feature on the home video release.

The Winchester brothers of Supernatural are no strangers to the world of animation. In 2011, Japanese animation studio Madhouse adapted select episodes into an anime series. Scooby-Doo is a franchise that’s even more accustomed to crossovers, with this January playing host to another Batman team-up.
