12 Fun Pokemon Facts

With several dozens of games spanning six generations, 16 anime films, several animated series and countless merchandise, the world that was built around the Pokemon franchise is huge and expansive, and home to thousands of interesting trivia. Here are some of them:

PsyDuck’s Type

Avid trainers/players already know Psyduck’s type, but casual or new fans of the franchise tend to assume that it’s a Psychic type Pokemon because it is more closely associated with psychic attacks. The truth is that Psyduck is a water-type Pokemon.

Anti-Cheating Measures

FireRed and LeafGreen has an anti-cheat measure coded in, wherein hacking in Mew and Deoxys will result in a Mew that will not listen to the trainer regardless of the badges you own. It is not possible to catch Mew normally.

There are Pokemon That Abduct Humans

If you take the time to read the descriptions for the Pokemon you own, you’ll see that some types – mostly from the ghost and psychic category – have a habit of abducting children and in some cases grown ups as well. This would be disturbing, except for the fact that trainers technically abduct Pokemon as well. So between a Gothita and a kid with a spare pokeball, it just turns into a case of who gets to abduct who first.

Real World Reference

Even though the regions are based on real places, it’s obvious that the world in Pokemon is set in a different reality. However, there are references to the real world, such as Parasect’s Pokedex entry, which says that its spores are used as a medicine in China.

Tooting the BugHorn

Even though Megahorn is a Bug-type move, there is only one bug-type Pokemon that can learn the move: Heracross.

Worst Defense Ever

In the anime, Magcargo is depicted as having the ability to retract into its shell as a means of protection. However, its Pokedex entries state that the shell can break easily.

It’s Complicated

Even though Mew is genderless, it can still learn the moves Attract and Captivate. However, the fact that it is also genderless means that it will fail on every opponent that is not genderless.

Time for an Intervention

In Pokemon Yellow, you can make your Pikachu very happy by offering him potions again and again – even if he doesn’t need them.

Lt. Surge is a Damn Cheater

In Pokemon Stadium 2, Lt. Surge had a Raichu that knows both Surf and Reversal. This is impossible to achieve through normal means, because Reversal is a GSC egg move while Surf is a Yellow-only move.

This Pokemon Has a Good PR Team

According to his Pokedex entry, Machamp can throw 1 thousand punches in two seconds. However, Machamp itself is in the bottom 50% on speed numbers.

This Pokemon Has a Good PR Team as Well

Arcanine’s species name is “Legendary Pokemon” even though Arcanines are not legendary in any way.

The Pokemon Prototype Was Developed for the Famicom

Of course, the Famicom was already reaching the end of its lifecycle at the time. Thankfully, it was easily ported over to the Gameboy due to the similarities in their hardware and capabilities. Moving the project over to the Gameboy instead of the Super Famicom is a smart move even if you disregard the difference in hardware. The Gameboy is still going strong at the time, had excellent market penetration, and very little competition. Additionally, the Gameboy’s successor was backwards compatible with Gameboy carts, a fact that extended the games’ lifespan even further than intended.
