Pokemon GO Still Banned in China

While detractors claim that Niantic’s ARG (Augmented Reality Game) Pokemon GO is already on its last legs, it cannot be denied that it was a massive phenomenon when it was first launched, and still remains popular among a segment of the mobile gaming market, especially now that long-requested features are trickling down via updates. However, there is one place that the ARG can’t gain a foothold on despite being a profitable market – China.

According to a Reuters report (http://www.reuters.com/article/us-china-pokemon-idUSKBN14U0TA), ARGs in general are blocked from being licensed in the region because they pose “potential security risks.” The censor body-governed games panel of the China Audio-Video and Digital Publishing Association highlighted a few of these risks, including the “threat to geographical information security” and the “threat to transport and the personal safety of consumers.”

Even if Niantic somehow manages a miracle and gets their ARG through, it wouldn’t be playable anyway because Google Maps, which Pokemon GO depends on for its functionality, is also blocked in China for similar security concerns.
