Popeye’s 90th Anniversary Celebrated with Popeye’s Island Adventures
The Popeye the Sailor franchise will celebrate its 90th anniversary next year, so King Features Syndicate will celebrate the occasion… with a new batch of animated shorts. Titled “Popeye’s Island Adventures,” this new short form series will introduce the classic character to a new generation of fans. Popeye’s Island Adventures is already available to stream on the official Popeye and Friends Youtube channel.
Popeye’s Island Adventures follows the spinach-loving, super strong sailor as he goes on his hilarious adventures. The series relies on the original squash and stretch animation style, while updating the characters and storyline to contemporary standards. The new Popeye looks more youthful and seems to have adopted a more eco-friendly lifestyle – he is now growing spinach on the roof of his houseboat and collecting rainwater in barrels. Olive Oyl, the original damsel in distress, is now billed as a beacon of feminist ideals: a strong, independent, and resourceful woman who is at the center of every adventure. Bluto remains the series’ antagonist, but his motives have changed as he pursues Popeye’s spinach in a quest for strength. The new Popeye project will complement the sailor man’s growing online presence (currently close to 10 million followers on Facebook).
