Sony Animation has just announced the release date for one of their eagerly anticipated projects, the CG animated movie based on the Popeye franchise. According to their announcement, the spinach-chomping strong-armed sailor will be making his way to the big screens on September 26 2014.
This marks the first time Popeye will appear in CG animated form on the big screen. The script will be penned by Smurfs writers Jay Scherick and David Ronn. Production will be handled by Avi and Ari Arad, in conjunction with Sony Pictures Animation.
The last time Popeye has appeared on the big screen was in Robert Altman’s 1980 live action movie, with the titular sailor being played by Robin Williams and Olive Oyl played by Shelley Duval. Of course, when it comes to animation, Popeye has already starred in numerous cartoon adaptations of his comic strip. In other media, Popeye has already seen several outings, most notably the hit 80s game on the Nes.
