Robot Chicken launches another fantastic season of stop-motion animation antics on Adult Swim, Sundays at Midnight ET. This is the final installment of the trilogy parodying DC Comics Superheroes and Villains in all their Robot Chicken glory. This third DC Comics Special loosely focuses on the Magical Friendship between Superman and Batman. You’ll get to see the Justice League multiverse explode in this one, which gives us a chance to see the Batman and Robin from the 60’s TV show, as well as the Batmobile. Batman and Superman will also have to go to counseling to improve their friendship. This special is the perfect kick-off for the hilarious Season 8 that follows.

This year, since Zeb Wells has moved on as an Executive Producer of Crackle’s Supermansion, which debuts on Thursday, October 8, there is a new director in town at Stoopid Buddy Stoodios for Season 8 of Robot Chicken. His name is Tom Sheppard. He has some large shoes to fill, but we’re certain he’s up to the challenge. No pressure!

Would you like to meet Tom Sheppard? ToonBarn’s Marc Morrell interviewed Tom and Executive Producer Matthew Senreich at SDCC 2015 for the Season 8 launch as well as the DVD release of Robot Chicken Season 7. After that interview, you’ll get to see Marc’s interview with 2 writers from RCDC3: Magical Friendship, Kevin Shinick and Tom Root. These videos are interlaced with previews from RCDC3: Magical Friendship, so please enjoy responsibly.

ToonBarn will be catching up with our friends from Robot Chicken at New York Comic Con this weekend. Look for more interviews coming within the next few weeks.

At its annual network upfront, Cartoon Network unveiled a conservative 2015′-16 slate, taking an “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” approach. While the line-up is sparse on original series, it will please fans of its current schedule. The series Adventure Time, Clarence, Regular Show, Steven Universe, The Amazing World of Gumball, Teen Titans Go! and Uncle Grandpa will all continue with new episodes.

The network annnounced two new series for network broadcast: Daniel Chong’s We Bare Bears, which was previously announced at last year’s network upfront, and a reboot of The Powerpuff Girls helmed by Adventure Time art director Nick Jennings (and with no announced involvement from creator Craig McCracken). A new digital series, Mighty Magiswords by Kyle Carrozza, is also planned.

New Original Programming:

We Bare Bears: We Bare Bears is a comedy about three bear siblings, named Grizzly, Panda and Ice Bear. Each episode follows their awkward attempts at assimilating into human society, whether they’re looking for food, trying to make human friends, or scheming to become internet famous. Created by Annie Award-winner Daniel Chong (Toy Story of Terror!), We Bare Bears is produced by Cartoon Network Studios.

The Powerpuff Girls: Slated for a 2016 launch, ThePowerpuff Girls reboot will include an all-new television series produced by Cartoon Network Studios and a full licensing program slated to roll out across all regions. One of the network’s most enduring original series, The Powerpuff Girls, which debuted on Cartoon Network in 1998, earned two Emmy Awards, five nominations and countless animation honors throughout its 78-episode run. The Powerpuff Girls centers on three sugar-coated superheroes — Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup — whose mission in life alternates between going to school, fighting crime, winning at hopscotch and saving the world before bedtime. Emmy and BAFTA award winner Nick Jennings (Adventure Time) is on board as executive producer.

Mighty Magiswords: From Kyle Carrozza comes Cartoon Network Studios first original digital series about a brother and sister team of “Warriors for Hire,” who go on hilarious adventures and crazy quests to collect magical swords.

New Original Crossovers, Movies and Specials:

Long Live the Royals Mini-Series: Join the royal family as they celebrate the yearly Yule Hare Festival. Parties and feasts will be a plenty as they struggle to balance ruling a kingdom and life as a typical family. A new mini-series from Emmy winner Sean Szeles (Regular Show).

Steven Universe/ Uncle Grandpa Crossover Special “Say Uncle: Two of your favorite Cartoon Network series, Steven Universeand Uncle Grandpa, are joining forces for a special crossover episode! Watch as a long lost relative of Steven’s comes to town to aid him in unlocking the power of his mother’s gem!

Regular Show: The Movie: From the creators of the hit Cartoon Network series Regular Show, comes a time travelling long-form special. After accidentally creating a “Timenado,” slacker groundskeepers Mordecai and Rigby go back in time and battle an evil volleyball coach in order to save the universe… and their friendship.

Adventure Time Special Mini-Series: In this multi-part series, Finn and Jake face a new threat to Ooo when Princess Bubblegum’s experiment unleashes ghosts from Marceline’s past.

New Acquired Programming:

Total Drama Presents: The Ridonculous Race: In this action-filled, outrageous buddy comedy, 18 pairs of contestants are put to the mental, physical and emotional test in a frantic race around the world. They’ll push themselves and their partners to the limit, but only one team will arrive at the mat first and become the winners of one million dollars!

Transformers: Robots in Disguise: Summoned by Optimus Prime to save Earth from a new Decepticon threat, Bumblebee puts his light-hearted mettle to the test after assembling a rouge team of young Autobot action heroes.

Supernoobs: From creator Scott Fellows (Johnny Test) and DHX Media, Supernoobs chronicles the misadventures of four nerdy friends, who are mistakenly tasked with saving the world from an evil space virus.

From Cartoon Brew and AWN Via Cartoon Network Press Release

(Some very interesting choices here. Many series from last years upfront have yet to air. Not surprising that Powerpuffs return after a near 10 or so year hiatus after the nasty conflagration between certain conservative groups and others over the IDW cover.)

Adult Swim Pilot From Robot Chicken Team Currently In Production

The Team Unicorn Saturday Action Fun Hour! pilot for Adult Swim has been cast and is currently in production. Danger Maiden Productions’ Clare Grant and Rileah Vanderbilt will executive produce and star alongside original Team Unicorn member Milynn Sarley (How I Met Your Mother) and Alison Haislip (Attack of the Show) as both Team Unicorn and their cartoon counterparts. Jane Lynch (Glee) voices the villainous Dark Puba, Alan Tudyk (Suburgatory) voices her sidekick, Chummy Cherub, Tara Strong (The Fairly Odd Parents) voices Billy, the boy with the ability to summon Team Unicorn, and Kevin Shinick (Mad) is the show’s announcer, a staple of the cartoon shows that inspired the pilot.

Dan Milano (Greg the Bunny) wrote the pilot, a modern twist on Saturday morning-style cartoon/live action hybrid shows but Team Unicorn is definitely for adults. The Team Unicorn Saturday Action Fun Hour! explores the adventures of the four mythical unicorn heroines who masquerade as human girls. Robot Chicken creators Seth Green and Matthew Senreich serve as executive producers for Stoopid Buddy Stoodios.

Grant and Vanderbilt said, “Team Unicorn is in the spirit of Sailor Moon and The Powerpuff Girls with a sprinkling of Voltron and Josie and the Pussycats.” Seth Green directs the pilot, Brian Sheesley (Dan vs.) is the animation director and Sean Becker (Holliston) is live-action director. The trio are all Emmy Award® winners, as are Lynch, Shinick, Senreich, and Milano.

Danger Maiden Productions was formed in 2009 when Grant and Vanderbilt wrote/produced and starred in the viral video Saber, which won Best Action and the Audience Awards at the Lucasfilm Fan Awards. Recently they completed the trilogy, releasing Saber III, and collectively, have racked up over 7 million views. Team Unicorn was first introduced to geek and female empowerment fans in 2010 via “G33K & G4M3R Girls”, written and produced by its original members. The viral video sensation captured a million views in its first week as a geek-centric parody of Katy Perry’s “California Gurls” music video. More Team Unicorn videos followed, including Alien Beach Crashers, SuperHarmony, A Very Zombie Holiday and For the Win. Team Unicorn has become a staple at comic, SciFi and gaming conventions and panels and as a media authority on the rising popularity of women in geek-oriented media and gaming.

NYCC Interviews with Robot Chicken's Matt Senreich and Breckin Meyer

ToonBarn’s Marc Morrell had the honor of interviewing Matt Senreich and Breckin Meyer at New York Comic Con, prior to the Robot Chicken panel, which packed Stage 1-D at the Javits Center on Friday, October 11, 2013.

Matt Senreich, as most of you know, is the Co-Creator and Executive Producer of Robot Chicken, which is now entering its 7th season on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim. With his business partner, Seth Green, they run a production company called Stoopid Monkey. In addition to Robot Chicken, Senreich has also created Titan Maximum (with Tom Root) and the currently sidelined Star Wars Detours. In 2010, Senreich received an Emmy Award for Outstanding Short-Format Animated Program.

Breckin Meyer is currently playing Jared Franklin on TNT’s Franklin & Bash, now in its 3rd season. When he’s not on the Franklin & Bash set, he continues to provide voice and writing credits for Robot Chicken. Meyer was nominated for an Emmy for his writing on “Robot Chicken: Star Wars”. Meyer has also been in several movies over the years such as Go, 54, Clueless, Road Trip, and Kate and Leopold. Meyer created the TBS Comedy Series, Men at Work, in 2012.

In this interview, Matt tells us why he likes the Chicken Nuggets they put on their DVDs and Blu-Rays as a special feature, and Breckin tells us what characters he was bound and determined to get, at all cost. We also find out who some of the guest voice actors are for Season 7, which is now in development. And Matt and Breckin let us know what they like to collect, or at least, had collected in the past.

If you liked that interview, there will be plenty more coming for other animated programs from New York Comic Con. We will also be providing a full review of the Robot Chicken panel at New York Comic Con in a separate article, coming soon.

Director Zeb Wells talks to ToonBarn about Robot Chicken Season 6

In honor of today’s Robot Chicken Season 6 Release on Blu-ray and DVD, ToonBarn’s Head Writer, Marc Morrell, interviewed the Director for all 20 episodes from Season 6, Zeb Wells. The Blu-Ray and DVD are available for the suggested retail price of $39.98 and $29.98, respectively. Check out ToonBarn’s preview of the Home Video Release of Robot Chicken Season 6 here:
http://www.toonbarn.com/robot-chicken-2/home-video-preview-robot-chicken-season-6

As a special treat, here is a video of one of the scenes from Season 6, where the Thor character is dressed exactly like Zeb Wells was when he made his own video, dressed as Thor, several years ago. You can see clips from Zeb’s video in the Robot Chicken Season 6 DVD Featurette, “Who the F___ is Zeb Wells?”:

Marc: Here we are, talking about Robot Chicken, Season 6, with Director, Zeb Wells. You were Director for all 20 episodes of Season 6, correct?

Zeb: Yes.

Marc: On this Blue-Ray for Robot Chicken, we get to see all 20 episodes from Season 6, with Commentary, several behind-the-scenes featurettes, outtakes, deleted scenes, chicken nuggets, deleted animatics, and deleted channel flips. How do you cram so much stuff on these discs, and are you personally involved with what goes on them?

Zeb: Well, on that, I have to give credit to Matt Senreich. He is the DVD Special Feature Fiend. He is hounding us through the entire season to pack as much stuff as possible onto those DVDs. So, he’s the one who’s always making sure a camera is shoved in the talent’s face, if we’re building special feature packages, the entire season, and he’s just really passionate about it. And it seems like a pain while he’s making us do it, but in the end, it’s always fun to see what we have.

Marc: How does it feel to know you’re always on camera?

Zeb: Well, after a while you just forget about it, because everything goes so crazy at some point. Where, you’re trying to get the show in on schedule, and everything just fades into the background.

Marc: You have your own featurette on these special features, “Who the F___ is Zeb?”

Zeb: Yep, (laughing). That’s right.

Marc: How did that come about?

Zeb: Well, I think that is the question a lot of people were asking themselves this season, on the crew. Because I had been a writer, hiding in the writers room, for seasons 3, 4, and 5, and somehow I got the opportunity to direct this season. And, I have also been writing comic books for awhile. So, we had a few interns who were asking people if they knew who Zeb Wells was, as embarrassing as that sounds to say. And so, Trish Gum, who was putting that package together, decided to make an entire thing about it, to find out just who the ‘F’ I was, and who I thought I was.

Marc: Who was the person that said, ‘I think we should get Zeb to direct this season’?

Zeb: When Matt and Seth left ShadowMachine last season, they started their own studio with Harv and Towner (John Harvatine IV and Eric Towner, Executive Producers), which is called Stoopid Buddy Stoodios, the director of Season 5 went off to co-direct the LEGO Movie. They needed a new director, so I kind of forced my way into getting an interview. I don’t think I was on top of the list, but I think I was able to snow them during the interview. Then, for all I know, there was just no one else around, and I was able to get in there. But, it ended up being super exciting for me and ended up being a great year where I learned alot.

Robot Chicken’s New Holiday Special Planned for Next Month

Marc: As the Director, it’s your job to make sure the scenes are authentic, to the littlest details, is that right?

Zeb: Yes, that’s right.

Marc: On one occasion, you had to go to the store and buy an airplane model, because it had to be a certain type of airplane?

Zeb: Yes (laughing). The set department, the amount of stuff that these guys have to build every week, just to keep the exchanges fed, is absolutely insane. So, we had a “Shirt Tails – Red Tails” mashup that we were doing. They had these really crappy die-cut B-1 bombers that they were going to use, but then they also had a big model, but they said we just don’t have the manpower to build this. My mouth just started watering. I had to get my hands on that model. So, I had to take it home over the weekend, build it, which ended up with me becoming the defacto model builder for the set shop now. I take the models home over the weekend and relax, building a model, and help the set shop out a little bit.

Marc: So, you DID build that model yourself, and did not delegate it to somebody else?

Zeb: I did. (laughing) I was flirting with delegating that, but I decided to take the bullet myself. I did not paint it, though. The wizards painted it themselves.

Marc: After finishing Season 6, you must have had a big season wrap party, right?

Zeb: We have a party every week while we’re shooting. Every Friday, we get around and watch “the weeklies”, which is what we call them. It’s all the footage that has been shot. So, I think by the end of the season, everyone was so exhausted that we just kinda limped off to our homes and called it good. We had a big party for the Robot Chicken DC Comics Special and so, by the end of the season, we were all just partied out.

Marc: You’ve been a comic book writer, and Robot Chicken Writer and Director. Are you doing all this at the same time?

Zeb: Yes, which my wife is about ready to kill me for doing. It is not a very fun way to live your life.

Marc: Do you ever see your focus changing?

Zeb: Yeah, I really did enjoy the directing, so I’d like to pursue that as much as I can. It was very fun. The writing is a very solitary experience, where you’re by yourself, pulling your hair out. In directing, there’s a lot of comaraderie because it’s every man against the show, and you have the deadline to try to get it done. Directing is definitely a more vibrant job, so I want to focus on that.

Marc: So, does that include your new baby, Ubermansion?

Zeb: Yeah, that’s right. Right after Robot Chicken Season 6 wrapped, I went into Directing Ubermansion, so it was really good to have that experience under my belt. And then, we went from that, right into Robot Chicken Season 7, so we just started shooting that this last week.

Marc: Wow!

Zeb: Yeah. It really doesn’t feel like we’ve stopped, so we have a good flow going now. I think it’s going to be a great season.

Marc: Now, was Ubermansion the next gig for Bryan Cranston after Breaking Bad?

Zeb: I think it was. Yeah, I think he recorded that dialog for us right before he was going to shoot the last 8 episodes of Breaking Bad. So, he kind of jammed that in the middle. So, if we get picked up, hopefully, that will be his next project.

Robot Chicken Season 7 Greenlit

Marc: Season 6 had a lot of guest voice artists that were brought on for these 20 episodes. Were you responsible for bringing in these artists, as Director, or does that just come with the territory?

Zeb: Well, Seth Green does a lot of the casting, and Matt, the other co-creator, they like to bring in the most interesting characters they can. So I usually just sit back and watch the people they bring in. You know, we had Sam Elliott this season.

Marc: I was just going to ask you if Sam Elliot was one of your favorite Season 6 guests.

Zeb: Oh, absolutely! He did a great job on that white wine sketch. What I love about Matt and Seth is they always cast him in a completely ridiculous role. Not only do we have Sam Elliott as the announcer, but then he also plays a Sectar, which is an insect. His line was something like, “Where’s Scopes, he wouldn’t go anywhere without his Tarantula.” The fact that Sam Elliott had to say that and he did it with such nerve was pretty amazing.

Marc: You have The First Ladies of Robot Chicken as a Featurette on the Season 6 DVD. How are Rachel and Jessica working out?

Zeb: They’re doing great. Jessica got sniped from us to do an HBO show, so she wasn’t able to write for us this season, but we miss her dearly. She’s welcome back any time. And Rachel is back for many more episodes this season, and she adds her little terrifying brand of crudeness to the show as we speak.

Marc: Do you have to keep a certain number of writers on the staff, or do you say, “This seems like enough”?

Zeb: No, we have 4 regulars, and we have two rotating slots. We like to keep those slots rotating to keep things fresh. If somebody rises to the top, like Rachel did last season, we’ll bring them on for more cycles than just one. We divide the season into 5 cycles of 4 episodes each. So, we have 4 weeks to write 4 episodes, and the next cycle, we’ll bring in another couple writers.

Marc: Ok, so what can we expect from season 7? Will there be more decapitations?

Zeb: We’re shooting the Christmas episode right now. We already have an Elf decapitation. The reindeer themselves were at fault. So, we’ve done a week of shooting, and we’ve already got one decapitation, and I wouldn’t be shocked if we hit a one-a-week quota on decapitations.

Marc: If you had to say something, as the Director of Robot Chicken, about show creators, Seth Green and Matt Senreich, what would you say?

Zeb: You never know what those two are going to throw at you. They never stop having crazy ideas, and they really, really keep you on your toes. It’s never boring.

Marc: Thank you very much for joining us on ToonBarn. Good luck with Season 7!

Zeb: Thank you, Marc. I really appreciate it.

Featuring all 20 episodes from the series’ latest season on Adult Swim, the Robot Chicken Season 6 Blu-ray and DVD boasts a treasure trove of behind-the-scenes footage and insider-access content – enough to satiate any fan of the series, Adult Swim, and pop culture. Kevin Shinick Interview at New York Comic Con 2012

In January, 2007, Seth Green hired Kevin Shinick to be a writer on Adult Swim’s Robot Chicken and their Robot Chicken: Star Wars specials. There, Shinick voiced many of the show’s characters and worked his way up to being Creative Director until he left in 2009.

While at Robot Chicken, Shinick met fellow writer Hugh Davidson, who left to reboot Looney Tunes for Warner Bros. Animation. They were looking to create an animated sketch comedy show for teens and pre-teens based on MAD magazine for Cartoon Network and Davidson suggested Shinick. Shinick wrote the pilot and has been the showrunner/producer/head writer/voice director and most frequent voice talent for MAD ever since. The show debuted in September, 2010, the same month he won an Emmy for his work on Robot Chicken, and even more importantly, became a first-time dad to daughter, Maisy.

Shinick won an Emmy for Outstanding Animated Program Short-format as a writer/voice actor/creative director on Adult Swim’s Robot Chicken. Now Shinick is Emmy-nominated again in the same category for the second year in a row for MAD, where he’s the showrunner/writer/main voice talent/voice director (let’s just say he’s the great and powerful Oz of MAD and you’ll get the gist) on Cartoon Network. MAD has a grueling year-round work schedule, but Shinick is always up to the task. Just look at what he has going on this fall:

On September 3, Shinick guest starred on NBC’s Grimm as a character who, um, reveals his animal instincts when a plague comes to town (Porcupine Man).

On September 9, Shinick was co-producer, writer and Narrator (much like Ted Knight on Superfriends) on the Robot Chicken DC Comics Special on Adult Swim, which was #1 in the young male demo.

On September 12, Shinick released his first Avenging Spider-Man #12 comic for Marvel. We discussed this with him in our interview. His second issue came out on October 10th.

On October 29, MAD’s Halloween Special (last year’s nabbed an Emmy nom!) will focus on FrankenWINNIE, a parody of Tim Burton’s upcoming movie, Frankenweenie, only it’s Christopher Robin who tries to bring his beloved Winnie the Pooh back to life after he’s accidentally ripped in half.

In December, it’s the MAD Xmas special. In January, Shinick will guest star in the pilot of David E Kelly’s medical drama for TBS, Monday Mornings along with Alfred Molina, Ving Rhames and Battlestar Galactica’s Jamie Bamber.

ToonBarn’s Marc Morrell met up with Kevin Shinick this past weekend at New York Comic Con, just a couple hours before the Robot Chicken Panel, where it was revealed that Robot Chicken was picked up by Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim for a Seventh Season.

Stay tuned to ToonBarn for more of Marc Morrell’s interviews from New York Comic Con. There’s lots more to come… on ToonBarn.
