In a unusual move, Mandy Patinkin will voice Papa Smurf in new Animated Smurfs movie.

Homeland star Mandy Patinkin is in final negotiations to voice Papa Smurf in Sony Pictures Animations’ reboot of The Smurfs.

Kelly Asbury, the animation vet who was nominated for the Cannes Film Festival’s Palme d’Or for Shrek 2and directed the animated comedy Gnomeo & Juliet, is helming the feature project, which is an all-animated venture.

Sony Pictures and Ubisoft Team Up for Smurfs 2 Game

In support of the upcoming release of Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures Animation’s CG/live action hybrid family comedy The Smurfs 2, leading videogame developer Ubisoft has been commissioned to develop and publish a video game based on the movie.

The game will be developed with the help of WayForward and will be released as an action-adventure platforming game for the Xbox 360, Playstation 3, Wii, and Wii.U consoles. There will also be an interactive storytelling book and mini-game collection for the Nintendo DS. The scheduled date for the launch of all the console versions of the game is July, 2013, in line with the film’s July 31 release.

The Smurfs 2 videogame will provide Smurfs fans the chance to play as a Smurf, while immersing themselves in an interactive adventure throughout the movie’s enchanting environments, such as New York and Paris, and will also take gamers to game-exclusive worlds such as The Arctic Tundra, and the Lava Jungle.

The Smurfs: A Christmas Carol was directed by Troy Quane, and features the voices of George Lopez, Jack Angel, Melissa Sutrm, Fred Armisen, Gary Basaraba, Anton Yelchin, and Hank Azaria. The story focuses on Grouchy Smurf, who behaves so badly to everyone and refuses to celebrate Christmas that he receives a visit from the Smurfs of Christmas Past, Present, and Future. The story of The Smurfs: A Christmas Carol is inspired by the classic Charles Dickens novel.

After much negotiation and term-finalizing, Sony Pictures has inked a two-year deal with Turner Media Innovations that promises fans around the world lots of new animated goodies! The deal specifically brings nine feature film releases to Cartoon Network EMEA, which runs across the UK, France, Spain, Italy, Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Romania, Turkey, and regions of the Middle East. What’s included in the mix? The Smurfs movie, The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn, Arthur Christmas, The Pirates! Band of Misfits, Men in Black 3, The Amazing Spider-Man, Hotel Transylvania, Cartoonito’s The Ha! Ha! Hairies, and others!

At first thought, you probably wouldn’t think there’s anything similar between lil blue critters, space aliens, old western cowboys, and patriotic super soldiers. And yet, all of them crammed into the top three spots at the box office this weekend. Captain America: The First Avenger took third in the group with $25 million, and the other two films, Cowboys & Aliens and The Smurfs, each raked in more than $36 million in their premiere weekends.
