Third SpongeBob Squarepants Movie Confirmed
A week ago, Viacom held its quarterly earnings call, which should be relatively uninteresting to those of us who are not interested in the corporate and revenue side of things, but one notable information was revealed when Viacom CEO Bob Bakish and Nickelodeon Group PResident Cyma Zarghami discussed feature film and merch expansion plans.
It was noted by Zarghami that the third SpongeBob SquarePants movie has been greenlighted. It is not entirely a new piece of information per se, as the third film was originally announced in 2015 as already in pre-production, but a later announcement pushed back the release to 2019 and nothing much was heard from it, until now.
However, the success of the SpongeBob Squarepants franchise doesn’t really make it surprising that a third film will be made – SpongeBob Squarepants is Nickelodeon’s highest-rating TV series of all time and is currently one of its most widely distributed. Even the films had similar successes, as the SpongeBob SquarePants Movie in 2004 netted $140 million at the global box office while the sequel, The Spongebob Movie: Sponge Out of Water, managed an even bigger worldwide take of $325 million when it released in 2015.
