NYCC Interview: Actor Phil LaMarr

Phil LaMarr has contributed so much as an actor to the animation industry that he should have a statue of each of his characters erected in a Phil LaMarr Hall of Fame Gallery. This Hall of Fame would take up the space of 50 football fields, at least. That’s how much acting and voice acting work Phil LaMarr has done. Here is a bucket list of the characters you MUST SEE, if you want to call yourself a Philophile:

Gabe from Kaijudo: Rise of the Duel Masters

We talked with Phil LaMarr at New York Comic Con in front of the Acid-Free Gallery Booth, where they were selling Limited Edition Screen Prints for Transformers and G.I. Joe. It made for a nice conversation, as Phil let us in on some of the characters he has done. He told us some of the behind-the-scenes information that you can only get from a voice actor. Sit back, relax, and watch Phil take you into his life as a voice actor:

Phil told us about two of his current projects that are keeping him busy these days. Here’s a short look into a web series called Inside the Legend, which Phil produces and stars in, and a cartoon called Kaijudo on The Hub Network that debuted last June, where Phil does the voice of one of the main characters. For the web series, there may be some language and adult humor that makes it PG-13, but Kaijudo is definitely for kids of any age.

Inside the Legend

Inside the Legend is Talk-show sketch comedy where two uniquely unstable hosts interview infamous figures from history and mythology. Starring Phil LaMarr and Vanessa Ragland.

Welcome to Inside the Legend, where we bring you history and fiction’s most notorious figures, and dig deep into the darkest recesses of their soul to pour hot, steaming light on history’s mysteries. Join CHAZ HANNIGAN and RHONDA KOKOPELE as they probe… INSIDE THE LEGEND…

Kaijudo – Rise of the Duel Masters

The series follows the adventures of a young boy named Ray who possesses the rare ability to summon and duel alongside fantastical creatures from a parallel dimension. Evil forces led by The Choten would have these creatures tamed and enslaved, so Ray and his two best friends Allie and Gabe must join the ranks of the mysterious Duel Masters to ensure the survival of both races before it’s too late. Phil plays Gabriel “Gabe” Wallace – A friend of Ray (The half-Japanese main protagonist of the series). He is more direct than most people, but is honest and true. His creature partner is Reef Prince Glu-urrgle.

Other voice artists include:
Dee Bradley Baker
Grey DeLisle
John DiMaggio
Oded Fehr
Andrew Kishino
Freddy Rodriguez
David Sobolov
Kari Wahlgren
Scott Wolf

Marc Morrell

I am a Big Fan of all types of animation. Like a lot of things, the cream always rises to the top. My favorites have included Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Rebels, anything Pixar, Phineas and Ferb, Voltron Legendary Defender, and the DC/WB Animated Films. I have a lot of Old School favorites as well, such as Star Blazers, Voltron, Looney Toons, Tom & Jerry, and Scooby Doo.
