SDCC 2013: ToonBarn Interviews Anthony Ruivivar from Beware the Batman

Anthony Ruivivar talks to ToonBarn's Marc Morrell about Beware the Batman at SDCC 2013

When Anthony Ruivivar found out he would be the new voice of Batman and Bruce Wayne for the Cartoon Network animated series, Beware the Batman, he was terrified. So many great actors had played the role before him, and he was bound and determined to not let anybody down. The first person he told, “I’m Batman!”, was his 3-year old son. We won’t tell you here what his son said, because you have to see Anthony tell you the story in the interview below. Suffice it to say, it’s a really great story.

SDCC 2013: ToonBarn Interviews Mitch Watson from Beware the Batman

ToonBarn's Marc Morrell talks to Mitch Watson, Producer of Beware the Batman, at SDCC 2013

Mitch Watson knows a boatload about Batman and Alfred. We know, because he talks about them, and their roles on Beware the Batman, without taking a breath, in our interview with him at San Diego Comic-Con. Mitch is a Producer for Beware the Batman, which airs on Cartoon Network, Saturday Mornings at 10 AM ET. Mitch knows a boatload because, when they were researching for the show, they had to pull from everything that has ever been done with the characters in the Batman Universe, to determine what their Batman backstory might be.

SDCC 2013: ToonBarn Interviews Greg Cipes from Teen Titans Go!

Greg Cipes, a.k.a. Beast Boy on Teen Titans Go!, here with Marc Morrell from ToonBarn, at San Diego Comic-Con

Greg Cipes, the only cast member from Teen Titans Go! to dress up in a costume for San Diego Comic-Con 2013, is Beast Boy on the Cartoon Network show. When I say “is”, you might think he provides the “voice characterization” for Beast Boy, or he “acts” like Beast Boy. No… Greg Cipes IS Beast Boy. If you would have seen him at the Teen Titans Go! panel at San Diego Comic-Con, where Mix Master Mike provided musical accompaniment, you would have seen him dancing on the table in his costume, and singing the same song that Beast Boy sang to Terra in the Teen Titans Go! episode that was screened at the panel.

Calvin and Hobbes in Animated Form

calvin and hobbes

One of the greatest comic strips to ever appear on the dailies, Calvin & Hobbes, may never see an official animated adaptation, primarily because creator Bill Watterson has always refused offers to bring the strip out of the newspaper pages and anthologies, and there are no signs that he’s going to change his mind soon. Thankfully, animator Adam Brown (of Comedy Central’s Ugly Americans) has stepped in and has given all of us a chance to see what a 2D Calvin and Hobbes cartoon would look like.

Jon Schnepp talks about making Grimm Fairy Tales Animated Pilot at Wizard World Philly

Jon Schnepp talks to ToonBarn's Marc Morrell at Wizard World Philly

OK, Jon Schnepp and I want to take a few moments to talk to the “Over-15” crowd of people who love cartoons and animation. If you don’t know who Jon Schnepp is, Number 1: I feel sorry for you, ’cause he’s pretty awesome, Number 2: you are about to meet him in our one-on-one interview, and Number 3: I have to explain to you WHY you want to know him before you meet him.

If you are like me, you saw the original animated Heavy Metal movie from 1981, and liked it so much, you hoped to see something else like it soon after that. I remember seeing this collection of animated short stories that were shown as vignettes within a larger story that tied together the beginning and end of the movie. These stories were adapted from the graphic comic stories in Heavy Metal Magazine. It was definitely something fresh and new because it had nudity, blood, adult themes and violence unlike anything I had seen before in cartoons and animation. And the music soundtrack was freakin’ fantastic, with songs from Cheap Trick, Don Felder, Black Sabbath and Nazareth.

NYCC Exclusive: Voltron Panel & Interviews

Voltron NYCC Panel

Voltron: Form Blazing Fun! was absolutely the funnest panel we have ever had the pleasure to attend. It was held at New York Comic Con on October 14, 2012, and covered EXCLUSIVELY by ToonBarn. This extremely fan-centered panel, Hosted by Jeremy Corray, Creative Director at World Events Productions (the Creators of Voltron), had a little bit of everything for fans of all ages. Half-way through the panel, Jeremy went through the crowd to have them ask questions. Throughout the whole panel, he gave out Voltron Prizes, from drawing ticket numbers from the tickets that were given to every person who entered the panel. And to top it off, Jeremy shared rare footage from Season 2 of Voltron Force directly from his hard drive (none of which could be recorded in our footage – TOP SECRET!). All throughout the hour of Forming Blazing Fun, Jeremy just got crazy with the Voltron fans.

NYCC Interview: Actor Phil LaMarr

Phil LaMarr has contributed so much as an actor to the animation industry that he should have a statue of each of his characters erected in a Phil LaMarr Hall of Fame Gallery. This Hall of Fame would take up the space of 50 football fields, at least. That’s how much acting and voice acting work Phil LaMarr has done. Here is a bucket list of the characters you MUST SEE, if you want to call yourself a Philophile:

NYCC Interview: Ashley Eckstein from Star Wars: The Clone Wars

ToonBarn's Marc Morrell interviewed Ashley Eckstein, the voice of Ahsoka Tano, from Star Wars: The Clone Wars, at New York Comic Con 2012

Here’s how awesomely cool Ashley Eckstein is: She is one of the busiest people on the planet, but somehow, she managed to give us an interview on Sunday Afternoon, after only meeting her for the first time on the previous Friday Night.

It was a real pleasure to meet Ashley and her husband David in New York City at the “The Mary Sue/Her Universe” Party on the Friday Night of New York Comic Con Weekend. Ashley was cosplaying as a Star Trek Zombie (Spock Hoodie), so she wasn’t immediately recognizable.
