Slap Happy Cartoons’ Nerds and Monsters gets a development deal

Vancouver-based animation studio Slap Happy Cartoons Inc. has recently announced that their animated project, Nerds and Monsters, has finally received a development deal courtesy of Corus Entertainment’s YTV, in which the 52×11 animated comedy series will be developed and licensed for distribution in Canada (and of course, if permitted – all over the world).

As the summer sun begins the depressing fade away, the one thing that keeps crazy-people-looking smiles plastered on our faces: the fall means new cartoons! Take YTV, for example. The network has already announced portions of the upcoming, Fall 2011 schedule, and there’s some great toons coming our way! Rated A For Awesome will launch on September 3 at 8:30am, with Beyblade: Metal Masters following shortly after, on September 10th at 11:30am. As if that weren’t enough, YTV will also bring us new episodes of Sidekick, starting October 8th, at 10:30am. That’ll certainly keep us TOONed in!

Working together with Nelvana Limited Productions, YTV Productions, and Corus Entertainment, Cartoon Network is out to show you that sidekicks have every bit as much heart as their super hero partners. And no, this isn’t a promo for Robin and Kid Flash from Young Justice, we’re talking about the new animated series appropriately called Sidekick. Airing beside fellow YTV compadre Almost Naked Animals, the toon follows Eric Needles and his best friend Trevor Troublemeyer, each training to become superheroes at the Academy for Aspiring Sidekicks. The show is getting a nice little boost on the CN, airing new episodes regularly in an effort to gain a following. So do your part to become a fan — a super fan!

Franklin celebrates 25th anniversary with Franklin and Friends

Next month, Franklin, the world’s beloved animated turtle, will turn 25 years old. In honor of this special 25th anniversary, creators Corus Entertainment, Kids Can Press, and Nelvana Studio will premiere a brand new CG animated toon called Franklin and Friends. The series will launch on Treehouse Friday, March 4th at 6pm. Nelvana will also bring the toon around the world, to places like TF1 in France, Minimax in Eastern Europe, YLE TV2 in Finland, NRK in Norway, TVN in Poland, Discovery Channel Latin America, Spacetoon in Indonesia, and others. In addition to Franklin, be on the look out for other characters returning to the franchise, including: Bear, Fox, Rabbit, Beaver, Snail, and others. Aunt T., a quirky new character, will also debut on the toon.

Got nothing to do on Sunday afternoons? Just filling time between school and/or work? Well, how about spending the day watching some animated films! This is the plan of Corus Entertainment’s YTV, who will be launching a new Sunday movie block called Big Fun Movies. The premiere date is Sunday, January 2nd, with three back-to-back movies starting at 2pm. The selection on that first Sunday will include Over the Hedge, Ice Age, and Igor. Other movies to air throughout January include Garfield Gets Real, Garfield The Movie, Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties, Muppets Treasure Island, Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium, The Golden Compass, The NeverEnding Story, Snow Day, The Mighty Ducks, Rugrats Go Wild, Open Season, and Open Season II.

On Sunday, August 15th, Treehouse and the whole of Corus Entertainment will proudly celebrate Dora the Explorer’s 10th anniversary. The key to the celebration will be the debut of the primetime TV movie Dora’s Big Birthday Adventure at 6pm. The hour long special will also be airing on Nickelodeon in the US, so if you have a satellite that can pick up both channels, feel free to switch back and forth! Special guests include: Rosie Perez, John Leguizamo, and Hector Elizondo, amongst others. Even at ten years old, Dora shows no signs of slowing down! The iconic animated diva, created by Chris Gifford, Valerie Walsh, and Eric Weiner, raked in about $2.5 billion in sales, this year alone. That could buy a lot of birthday presents!

Just months after Bakugan: Battle Brawlers made its way to the Nintendo DS, Activision and Nelvana Enterprises issue a new call to brawl on Nintendo’s portable system with Bakugan Battle Trainer. In Bakugan Battle Trainer, players master the secrets of training their Bakugan while choosing how to improve their skills and abilities. The game, a fresh extension of the blockbuster franchise named 2009’s toy of the year, includes an in-depth training mode that helps their Bakugan excel at all aspects of battling. Players send their trained creatures into battle to free their imprisoned brethren from the enemy’s hold. Beyond this ingenious style of play, the classic elements of Bakugan are in place; collect up to 30 creatures, intense battle action, and the ability to improve your rank by defeating opponents.
