Greatest TV Cartoon Theme Songs #12: Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids

Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids theme song summarizes what happens in every episode. The Junkyard Gang get together and sing songs, playing instruments made from parts they found in the junkyard. They have fun together, just being themselves, but sometimes they have to deal with very real issues. That’s where the learning plays a big role. Typically, each episode covers an issue or problem commonly dealt with by young people, like skipping school, love and relationships, physical health, and bullying. Sometimes, they even dealt with harder issues like stealing, smoking, vandalism, racism, child abuse, drug use, and guns. Though, these were usually toned down for a cartoon.

Luken Communications and Classic Media bring Gumby, Magoo, and Fat Albert to PBJ

Classic Media has a whole huge lineup of cartoons in their stable; Archie, Boris & Natasha, Richie Rich, Casper, Dick Tracy, Fat Albert, Gumby, Underdog, He-Man, She-Ra, Mr. Magoo, Rocky & Bullwinkle, Rudolph, Frosty, Transformers, Voltron, and so many others. That’s something that Luken Communications has been studying heavily – so much so that the network is teaming with Classic Media to create a new network called PBJ. Similar to Discovery and Hasbro’s The Hub, this channel will launch with a stable of classic series (animated and otherwise) as well as begin to develop new shows for a new audience. Be on the look out for PBJ to hit your cable system this summer.

The first episode of Bill Cosby’s long running animated series, Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids, originally hit CBS Saturday mornings in 1972, nearly 40 years ago. Heck, even the movie with SNL’s Kenan Thompson is now 6 years old. It seems like the Classic Media and Filmation franchise was just due for an update. “Perfect timing,” says iTunes, who launches all 36 episodes of season one to the digital platforms. Users have the choice of grabbing individual episodes for $1.99, or the entire season for $29.99. Each episode also features live-action segments from Bill Cosby, who hosted every skit.
