Gergely Wootsch Releases Animated Short for Penny Dreadful’s Frankenstein

As excited as we are with the upcoming horror-slash-action-slash-drama TV series Penny Dreadful, we have to admit that news about it doesn’t exactly belong on Toonbarn. It’s not a cartoon and the franchise doesn’t have anything to do with any animated platform. But wait – Beakus director Gergely Wootsch has recently posted the first of three promised animated videos designed to promote the new series.

This one focuses on the series’ Frankenstein, and takes its cue from the dark atmosphere one would normally associate with Mary Shelley’s original yarn. The clip is narrated by Matthew Sweet and focuses on how the novel came about:

Technically speaking, giant robots predated the Japanese pop culture’s depictions in modern manga, but the main difference is that they were originally depicted as destructive tools of evil mad scientists (think of evil, metallic versions of the Frankenstein monster or the Golems). One of the first ever stories to feature heroic giant robots is Mitsuteru Yokoyama’s 1956 manga and 1963 anime series Tetsujin 28.

Bron Studios Launches Mighty Mighty Monsters

Vancouver-based Bron Studios has recently launched Bron animation, which is tasked to develop and produce original kid’s animated intellectual properties for TV and film, with an aim to specialize on absurd family comedies. The animation studio’s first project is titled Mighty Mighty Mnsters, which is based on the book series created by Sean Patrick O’Reilly.

Mighty Mighty Monsters focuses on a bunch of classic movie monster kids, such as Frankenstein, Dracula, and Wolf Man, who were expelled from monster school and sent to a human immersion program, which basically means that they get enrolled in a normal human middle school, where they come face to face with the terrifying tween culture. Mighty Mighty Monsters will first appear as a 2 x 44 HD specials entitled “Halloween Havoc” and “New Fears Eve”.

Miley Cyrus to Join Cast of Hotel Transylvania

In a recent Entertainment Weekly report, Sony has confirmed that country princess Miley Cyrus has been cast as Dracula’s teenage daughter in the new CG movie from Imageworks entitled Hotel Transylvania. Scheduled for a September 21, 2012 release, Hotel Transylvania tells the story of a resort made exclusively by monsters, which is currently being managed by the King of Vampires himself, Dracula. The biggest motivation for Dracula’s maintenance of the resort is to shelter and prevent her daughter Mavis from venturing into the outside world. All of the vampire king’s plans are ruined when a normal person arrives at the resort and begins to attract all sorts of unwanted attention, including Mavis’. Tonight’s special on ABC has it all: we’ve got everyone’s favorite green ogre, Shrek. We’ve got the star of this weekend’s big blockbuster debut, Puss in Boots. We’ve got three frightening stories, lots of candy, and tons of various Halloween costumes. What does it all equal? Scared Shrekless! The DreamWorks Animation Halloween themed holiday special plays tonight at just-before-8pm; 7:58pm to be exact. Yes, that’s right, it means ABC is pushing around Dancing with the Stars — see, cartoons are that powerful! The special features three tales: The Bride of Gingy, Boot’s Motel, and The Shreksorcist, each attempting to scare the other story tellers. If you make it home from candy collecting in time, be sure to check (Shrek?) it out!

This Monday is of course the spookiest day of the year, Halloween! No doubt, you already have your Halloween costume picked out, and you’re set on raking in as much candy as possible. But ABC would like to remind you to get home before too late, in order to catch the annual airing of the new animated classic Scared Shrekless. In a weekend where the Shrek franchise is already hyped up once again thanks to the new Puss in Boots cinematic adventure, Scared Shrekless brings Team Green on a series of haunted story adventures, with Shrek hoping to prove that nothing can scare an Ogre. The special spooks ABC on Monday, October 31st – Halloween night – at just before 8pm (listed as “7:58pm” – two extra minutes of scary!)

Adam Sandler goes Dracula in Hotel Transylvania

Just this week, Sony Pictures Animation announced Adam Sandler has checked into Hotel Transylvania. The comedic actor will star as the voice of Dracula in the 3D animated comedy, which is due to hit theaters just before Halloween next year, September 21st, 2012. Animated by Sony Pictures Imageworks, the film will feature many voiceover celebrities, including Kevin James as Frankenstein, Fran Drescher as the Bride of Frankenstein, David Spade as Quasimodo, Steve Buscemi and Molly Shannon as a married werewolf couple, Cee Lo Green as Murray the Mummy, and Andy Samberg as Jonathan. Yeah, just Jonathan. He’s the “normal guy” in the film.
