Paramount Animation to animate CG Nickelodeon movies

The universe that is Viacom continues to grow! One section, Paramount Pictures, has just recently announced a new in-house animation division that they proudly refer to as Paramount Animation. The goal of the dept is to pump out CG animated films, on a Pixar and DreamWorks Animation level, and much of the focus will be on Nickelodeon properties, whom also fall under the giant Viacom umbrella. The studio’s first official film under the new studio should hit theaters in 2014, boasting a budget of up to $100 million. With Paramount’s first fully owned CG property, Rango, a success on the big screen, it’s likely we’ll see sequels for the Johnny Depp-voiced lizard shift over to Paramount Animation.

The Pirates! Band of Misfits set sail for Aardman

Seems like there’s a lot of pirating going on. Rango’s Johnny Depp is returning as Captain Jack Sparrow in a few weeks. Jake and the Neverland Pirates are ruling over Disney’s new Disney Jr. network. Monkey D. Luffy and crew are still hunting One Piece. And now Aardman Animation is working with Pathe and Sony Pictures Animation on a new animated tale, The Pirates! Band of Misfits. The 3D, stop-motion film is based on Gideon Defoe’s series of The Pirates! books, about a Pirate Captain and his loyal crew fighting for the Pirate of the Year Award. The movie will follow the same quest, encountering Queen Victoria, Charles Darwin, Black Bellamy, Cutlass Liz, and others along the way. Hugh Grant recently joined the cast of the Columbia Pictures story, set to debut March 30th, 2012, meeting up with other stars lending their voice; Martin Freeman, David Tennant, Imelda Staunton, Jeremy Piven, Salma Hayek, Brian Blessed, Brendan Gleeson, Russell Tovey, Ashley Jenson, and more.

Nickelodeon brings Rango to theaters

Nickelodeon brings Rango to theaters

In three weeks time, we’ll be Rango-ing about the ToonBarn offices, preparing ourselves for the Nickelodeon and Paramount film set to hit theaters on March 4th. Starring Johnny Depp, Rango tells the story of a former-pet chameleon who hits the old west styled town of Dirt to become the sheriff. Unfortunately, the town has a long history of bad things happening to the lawmen. Industrial Light & Magic is heavily involved in the film, which marks the first time in over 35 years the famous studio (known for work on the Star Wars flicks) has been involved with an animated movie. Perhaps Rango has the Force!

Alice in Wonderland 60th Anniversary Edition DVD and Blu-Ray review

Alice in Wonderland 60th Anniversary Edition DVD and Blu-Ray review

Disney has a large stable of animated tales in it’s long history. There’s the Disney Princess flicks (Cinderella, The Little Mermaid, Mulan), the Animal films (the Jungle Book, Tarzan, Lion King, 101 Dalmatians), and even a CG category (Toy Story, The Robinsons, UP). Then, there’s a film like Alice in Wonderland… which fits no category. In Disney’s original, animated retelling of the classic Lewis Carroll novel, The Mad Hatter has more resemblance to Winnie the Pooh’s Rabbit than Johnny Depp, and yet there’s all the magic and wonder captured some 60 years ago that Tim Burton revived in his new take. …right?

The case of Super Bowl XLV is no different, with Rango making a star appearance around half time. The CG film, a joint venture between Nickelodeon Movies, Blind Wink, GK Films, Industrial Light & Magic, and Paramount Pictures, stars Johnny Depp as the voice of Rango, a pet chameleon who ventures to an Old West town called Dirt. It’s there that he must prove himself a hero, or dying trying. Check out the trailer commercial spot!

Could Tim Burton take on Sleeping Beauty after Alice in Wonderland

Could Tim Burton take on Sleeping Beauty after Alice in Wonderland

Tim Burton knows cinematic success. Disney ain’t too shabby either. Recently, the two paired to recreate one of the Magic Kingdom’s animated classics, Alice in Wonderland, to phenomenal success. With a full stable of other blockbusters in their lineup, it’s not too surprising that the grouping could work together once more on another film — and rumors point to Sleeping Beauty. The tale features a jilted sister named Maleficent, one of the scariest toons of all time, who is so ticked off that she didn’t get an invite to Aurora’s birthday, she turns into a dragon and tries to squash her. Well, not exactly, and we may have skipped a bit of the story, but those are some pretty key moments. What do you think, can Burton work his magic again? And would Johnny Depp play Prince Charming?

Nickelodeon and Paramount introduce Johnny Depp as Rango

Rango is a pet chameleon who lives in a terrarium. Everything is calm and comfortable and relaxing and quiet. Until, one day, he somehow ends up in the rough of an Old West town in the American southwest, whose name is actually “Dirt.” As he’s always thought himself a hero, Rango establishes himself as the lawman, strolling the streets as a sheriff like character. Unbeknown to him, the “good guy” role doesn’t do very well in Dirt – with a whole cemetery filled with good guy tombstones. But that doesn’t stop Rango from trying, constantly seeking to fit in, with his surroundings, no matter how challenging – just like a good chameleon! Check out the teaser trailer of this upcoming Nickelodeon and Paramount flick, due in theaters March 4th, 2011.
