Nickelodeon readies Avatar’s The Last Airbender: Legend of Korra

Nickelodeon readies Avatar's The Last Airbender: Legend of Korra

Seventy years after the end of the Avatar: The Last Airbender, Korra has stepped in where Aang left off, filling in as the new Avatar. She’s a hot-headed and rebellious young woman from the Southern Water Tribe, ready to take on the world. The series follows Korra as she faces an anti-bender revolt while mastering the art of Airbending from Aang and Katara’s son, Tenzin. For those worried about a different adventure, fear not! Nickelodeon’s spin-off series will have the same driving force behind the toon as the original did, namely Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko. Seems a little like Batman Beyond picking up after Batman: The Animated Series, and we can’t wait!

Nickelodeon's The Legend of Korra, the waterbender after Avatar Aang

With the success of the Avatar animated series, as well as M. Night Shyamalan’s motion picture The Last Airbender, it’s no wonder Nickelodeon wants to keep the train running for the American born anime series! Thankfully, we’ve finally got word of the next chapter in the franchise: The Legend of Korra. The latest Avatar, Korra is the successor to Aang. She is a teenage girl born to the Southern Water Tribe who has already mastered Waterbending, Earthbending, and Firebending. She needs only to learn Aang’s art of Airbending to evolve into a fully realized Avatar, learning from Tenzin, the son of Aang and Katara. The toon, from the same creators, Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, is set to debut on Nick in 2011. Sounds like a fun new take on the series, but will it surpass the original?

The movie promises to delight on all three dimensions now, reaching out into the audience, as long as you’re wearing those neat little glasses. One way to instantly mark how fun a franchise is; the toys! Up for grabs at this point are the toys and playsets that will be based on the upcoming film, The Last Airbender, which offers a live-action and varied take on the Nick toon. The movie, created by Paramount and M. Night Syamalan, will partner with Spin Master for the toyline, including 10 inch action figures of the main characters like Aang, Zuko, Katara, and Shokka, as well as an Appa (the flying bison) that smaller versions of the figures can fit on. There will also be versions of Aang’s staff weapon, for those looking for a new toy, or upcoming Halloween costume! The movie hits theaters on July 2nd, the same day the first sets of toys hit stores. Stay TOONed right here for more details!
