The Last Airbender: Legend of Korra Trailer

It’s no secret that M.Night Shyamalan’s poorly received take on Avatar: The Last Airbender has killed all the buzz it originally managed to drum up for the franchise, and the only people still interested in a new addition to the franchise are the loyal fans who got started on the series through the books and the cartoon – the same people who would have followed the series even without the Hollywood buzz, and the exact same people who felt betrayed by the sub par quality of the live action adaptation.

Movies based on animated classics are typically hit-or-miss. Whether it’s a live-action remake like the Transformers series has been, or a extended continuation of the animation, like the SpongeBob movie, the results can either pay off big time, or leave fans a little upset. Last year, M. Night Shyamalan brought Nickelodeon’s unique anime, Avatar: The Last Airbender, to the big screen in a live-action recreation. The results weren’t overly pleasing to the hardcore fans of the Nicktoon, and an organization in Hollywood called the Razzie Awards took notice. The “reverse Oscars”, the Razzies are meant to acknowledge the worst in cinema, and five of which went to The Last Airbender, including Worst Picture, Worst Director, Worst Screenplay, Worst Supporting Actor, and Worst Misuse of 3D. Yowch. All this for a film that grossed $300 million at the global box office. Too harsh?

Nickelodeon’s The Legend of Korra, the waterbender after Avatar Aang

Nickelodeon's The Legend of Korra, the waterbender after Avatar Aang

With the success of the Avatar animated series, as well as M. Night Shyamalan’s motion picture The Last Airbender, it’s no wonder Nickelodeon wants to keep the train running for the American born anime series! Thankfully, we’ve finally got word of the next chapter in the franchise: The Legend of Korra. The latest Avatar, Korra is the successor to Aang. She is a teenage girl born to the Southern Water Tribe who has already mastered Waterbending, Earthbending, and Firebending. She needs only to learn Aang’s art of Airbending to evolve into a fully realized Avatar, learning from Tenzin, the son of Aang and Katara. The toon, from the same creators, Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, is set to debut on Nick in 2011. Sounds like a fun new take on the series, but will it surpass the original?

The film tells the story of Aang; the only individual on the planet with the power to manipulate all four elements, and it’s up to him to wield those abilities, as the Avatar, to save the day. This will serve as the opening chapter into the anime-based title, with a potential trilogy to follow, based on the success of this one. Local theaters in my area have already sold out the opening shows, with hordes of fans lining up to get their first look. Who is going this weekend??

Last week, theaters welcomed Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief to the box office; and warmly, we might add. More importantly to us, however, was that the film included the newtrailer to M. Night Shyamalan’s upcoming film The Last Airbender – longer than the trailer shown during the Super Bowl. The story, based on Nickelodeon’s Avatar The Last Airbender, tells the tale of Aang, a 12-year-old boy (played by Noah Ringer) who provides the last hope for restoring harmony to a land consumed by chaos. Take a look at the trailer right here and see for yourself!

Aang shines it what truly looks to be an amazing battle by the four elemental nations; Air, Water, Earth, and Fire. The flick hits theaters July 2nd, beginning the story on a grand scale. But don’t let these words steal the show; check out the trailer here for yourself, and let us know what you think

This Avatar is no Air Bender

This Avatar is no Air Bender

For some time now, famed director James Cameron has been hard at work on a not-so-secret project; an upcoming movie called Avatar. Despite the timing coincidence, this film has no connection to the M. Night Shyamalan flick The Last Air Bender, about the Nickelodeon star of the same name. Cameron’s story, which hits theaters worldwide this December, takes place on the distant moon Pandora, where a reluctant hero embarks on a journey as he leads a heroic battle to save a civilization. Avatar’s story was actually in development for nearly 15 years, which is visible in all of the amazing detail seen in the trailer, below the break. Check it out, and let us know if this looks better than the Nick-backed film!
