DreamWorks promises more Kung-Fu Panda, Penguins of Madagascar, How To Train Your Dragon

DreamWorks promises more Kung-Fu Panda, Penguins of Madagascar, How To Train Your Dragon

Ain’t nothin better than a good CG animated film. Or, say, like 12 of them. This, according to the higher-ups at DreamWorks Animation, is the goal for the next few years, as the company plans to unveil not just sequels to their favorite icons, but deep franchises! We’re not just talking about Kung-Fu Panda 2, we’re talking about already having ideas for Kung-Fu Panda 3 and Kung-Fu Panda 4. Maybe even 5 and 6! The same is true for How to Train Your Dragon and Penguins of Madagascar, each getting the extended Shrek-like franchise treatment, according to DreamWorks’ Jeffrey Katzenberg. So, what do you think? Good thing? Bad thing? Are franchises best when they go out “leaving you wanting more”, or would you rather they keep milking them so you can keep enjoying them?

Despicable Me’s Minions and the Despicable Banana

Despicable Me's Minions and the Despicable Banana

Of all the animated films to hit theaters in the past few years, there are a rare few where the audience is as intrigued by the main characters as they are with the secondary characters. Lion King’s Timon and Pumba are good examples, as are the teams of penguins and monkeys from the Madagascar franchise. Each of those films had so much success with the secondary group that those sub-stars went on to receive their own movies and animated series on TV. Such, it seems could be the fate with Despicable Me – a story that focused on Gru’s maturity from super villain to adoptive father, but never lost sight of those adorable (and evil) Minions. Maybe there’s a toon in there someday, but in the meantime, there’s already a few solo adventures, including the “Banana” mini movie on the Despicable Me Blu-ray and DVD – not to mention “Home Makeover” and “Orientation Day”. Take a look!

DreamWorks adds Frances McDormand to Madagascar 3

DreamWorks adds Frances McDormand to Madagascar 3

In 2005, DreamWorks Animation brought Madagascar to the world. The sequel, Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa, hit a few years later in 2008. Sure, there’s been an awesome animated series, The Penguins of Madagascar, but if my math is correct, and it almost never is, we’re due for the third piece in the theatrical trilogy. Jeffrey Katzenberg, DreamWorks CEO, agrees, confirming that a third film (and possibly an eventually fourth!) is on the way. Madagascar 3 is underway, ready for theaters on May 18th, 2012. The general plot will revolve around Alex, Marty, Gloria, and Melman still trying to get home, working their way through Europe’s traveling circus along with King Julien, Maurice, Mort, and the Penguins, amongst others (like a sea lion, a jaguar, a tiger, and more!). Frances McDormand will do her best to stand between the friends and success, starring as the villainous animal control officer. You ready to dance?

Nickelodeon Studios taps Oktobor Animation for The Penguins of Madagascar

Nickelodeon Studios taps Oktobor Animation for The Penguins of Madagascar

As the world of CG animation grows by leaps and bounds, there has become a larger need for quality CG studios, giving movies and animated TV toons the polish that they need. Omnilab Media and Oktobor are no slouches in this field, joining together to form Oktobor Animation. Working along with Backyard Animation Pictures, this mega studio will become a dominant force for CG animation, leading the way with Nickelodeon Studios’ hit series The Penguins of Madagascar. The plan is to balloon the studio to over 120 artists and producers in the next 12 months, then 300 by 2014. And with the demand already so great for more of DreamWorks Animations “Penguins” series, that seems pretty likely!

Nick and DreamWorks join for The Penguins of Madagascar: The Lost Treasure of the Golden Squirrel

The Penguins of Madagascar has been one of Nickelodeon’s more successful series, and neither Nick nor DreamWorks Animation is ready to forget that fact! Recently, the pair joined forces to debut a brand new special for the toon, titled The Lost Treasure of the Golden Squirrel. The episode pitted the Penguins versus the Lemurs versus the Rats, all in a quest to see who will reach the treasure first! The special, which will be replayed again and again over the next few weeks, was a big ratings earner for the network, drawing one of the larger audiences in the cartoon’s history. Kung Fu Panda: The Series starts production

Kung Fu Panda: The Series starts production

Nickelodeon has had tremendous success with the hit series The Penguins of Madagascar, based on the DreamWorks Animation film franchise Madagascar. Now, they’re taking that same logic and applying it to another DreamWorks movie, Kung Fu Panda, giving us the creatively named Kung Fu Panda: The Series. We’d heard about this awhile ago, but can now finally confirm that the show is in production. The series, which will be produced at Nickelodeon’s Animation Studios by Cheryl Holliday, hopes to grab at least special guest appearances of all the original movie cast, though the rumor now is they’ll be using sound-alikes to replace the celebrity voices, like Jack Black and Angelina Jolie. Be sure to stay TOONed right here for more updates.

Fanboy and Chum Chum to debut on Nickelodeon UK

Folks in the US have been enjoying the new CG animated series Fanboy and Chum Chum for a few months now, which has made those in the UK a bit jealous. Hoping to even the score, Nickelodeon now promises they’ll be bringing the hit series over seas for all to enjoy! This gift comes along with the soon-to-debut new logo for Nick UK, as well as new episodes of SpongeBob SquarePants, The Troop, and Penguins of Madagascar.
