DreamWorks' 2012 Revenues Boosted by Puss in Boots

According to a recent report by Daily Variety, DreamWorks Animation has seen a 26% boost in revenue of $136 million, which raises their profits to $9.1 million for the first quarter of 2012. The boost comes from the healthy box office and home-entertainment performance of the Shrek spinoff, Puss in Boots, which managed to gross over $554 million in worldwide box office to date as well as contribute $73.6 million of revenue to the quarter.

Happy Feet Two’s meager $22 million domestic box office take is a big disappointment when compared to George Miller’s original Happy Feet’s blockbuster opening, which managed to earn $41.5 million over a weekend back in 2006. Some have speculated that the poor performance of the Happy Feet sequel is due to the tough competition, as the massively popular Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 1 opened alongside the CG animated penguin movie. The Twilight film, which made #139.5 million domestically and $144 million overseas, performed so well that it broke the record $283.5 million gross set by its previous installments.

The news may be confusing at first, but in spite of Dreamworks Animation’s Puss in Boots topping the box office, its meager box office earnings are resulting in a lot of head scratching amongst Dreamworks Animation’s investors. Shares in Dreamworks has fallen by 8 percent last Monday, after news of Puss in Boots disappointing $34 million opening week. It was good enough to make it No. 1 at the box office, but it falls below the amount needed in order for the film to make a profit, which made it perform well below the investors’ expectations.
