DHX Media Moves For-Hire Operation to Canada

Canadian indie animation studio DHX Media is in the process of moving its La-based work for hire production operations to Canada in order to take advantage of the country’s tax credits. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Halifax-based company is trying to look for more cost saving measures after its $112 million purchase of Cookie Jar Entertainment, with the closing of its low-margin LA service studio work being the first in a series of planned cost saving (note the difference between cost-saving and cost-cutting) measures.

The biggest night in Animation has come and gone! The 40th Annual Annie Awards were held at UCLA’s Royce Hall in Los Angeles, California. This Hollywood Gala that honors the best achievements in Animation took place at 7 PM PT (10 PM ET) on Saturday Night, Feb 2, 2013.

Big Winners of the night were Wreck-It Ralph from Walt Disney Animation Studios with 5 awards and Dragon: Riders of Berk from Dreamworks Animation coming a close second with 4 awards.

The Annie Awards were hosted by movie reviewer Leonard Maltin and voice actors Rob Paulsen and Maurice LaMarche. In addition to the trio, actor Seth Green made a special appearance at the award ceremony.

Teletoon to Premiere DreamWorks Dragons: Riders of Berk in Canada

This coming November 3, Teletoon will be hosting the Canadian premiere of the new animated series DreamWorks Dragons: Rider of Berk with back to back episodes starting from 8p. As a lead-in to the premiere, the channel will be airing DreamWorks Animation’s CG animated movie How To Train Your Dragon, which is the series that Riders of Berk was spun off from, at 6p.

DreamWorks Dragons: Riders of Berk is getting ready to land in September 4, Tuesday, at 7:30 PM on the Cartoon Network. The show is a spin-off of the Academy Award-nominated film How to Train Your Dragon, which managed to gross an estimated $500 million worldwide while opening as the #1 film in over 30 different countries.
