DreamWorks Takes $87 Mil Write Down Due to Rise of the Guardians

RT_RiseOfTheGuardians

According to a recent report by The Hollywood Reporter, DreamWorks will be taking an $87 million write-down on its 2012 box office misfire Rise of the Guardians, marking the largest write-down the studio has taken for one of its projects. The last time the studio had to take a massive write down was with 2007’s Flushed Away.

Rise of the Guardians reportedly cost around $145 million to make and has made over $302 million in the global office, which may seem like a lot of money to us but is below the studio’s previous blockbusters (such as Shrek, Kung Fu Panda, and Madagascar 3) and way below the expectations of investors and executives.

The Peter Ramsey-directed CG animated film will be presented with the Hollywood Animation Award during the gala ceremony on October 22, at the Beverly Hilton. This seems like good news for Paramount, as the previous award recipients have gone on to win the Best Animated Features Oscar, including: Ratatouille (2007), Wall-E (2008), Up (2009), Toy Story 3 (2010) and Rango (2011).

DreamWorks Animation’s upcoming holiday season feature Rise of the Guardians was well-received at the Cannes Film Festival, during their big press event designed to drum up support for the movie. It wasn’t surprising, since DreamWorks head Jeffrey Katzenberg has already made a habit out of launching his big projects at Cannes for the past few years, with each one being met with positive approval. This will continue later this week as DreamWorks screens Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted as well.
