James Gunn Discusses Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy

The cast list for Marvel’s big screen adaptation of Guardians of the Galaxy is starting to come together, with big names like Michael Rooker, Zoe Saldana, Chris Pratt, and Dave Batista already confirmed. It also seems like the story behind the movie is coming along nicely, with director James Gunn recently revealing a few choice bits during an interview with

“In terms of a lot of stuff we’re very much like The Avengers, where it’s a very big, huge movie,” says Gunn in an interview with HeyUGuys. “It’s different because it’s cosmic, it’s in outer space, it’s very colourful.

“We have a whole history of science fiction behind us that we’re dealing with, and borrowing from, and also fighting with to create something unique. But at the same time there’s a lot of stuff it has in common with The Avengers.”

Gunn also reveals that he’s inspired by The Avengers when it came to the casting decisions for Guardians of the Galaxy:

“I was very specific that I wanted it to be somebody really extraordinary,” he says of Chris Pratt’s Star-Lord. “I really had Robert Downey Jr. in mind a lot. You had this guy who came in and he inhabited Tony Stark, when you first saw Tony Stark he blew your mind, you couldn’t believe what you were seeing.

“We saw a lot of good performances, but it wasn’t until Chris came in and he read and I was like, ‘oh my God’, this guy has his own, very particular, amazing take on the character that blew my mind, blew me away. Then I thought, this is the first guy I could see sharing the screen with Robert Downey Jr. and giving him a run for his money.”

The icon of DreamWorks Animation has kept the CG animated toon in first place, battling the Alien Monster indy Skyline and Iron Man’s Robert Downey Jr. in Due Date. Megamind even stopped Denzel’s new film ironically named Unstoppable! The 10 day total for Megamind rests at just below $100 million, just behind the pace set by DreamWorks’ other 2010 release, How to Train Your Dragon. DreamWorks prepping Megamind for theaters

A few years ago, Ben Stiller (of Madagascar fame) pitched an idea to DreamWorks’ Tom McGrath about a super villain who plays the part of a super hero. It was here that the early stages of Megamind (Oobermind, at the time) were born. The goal was to get Stiller to voice the characters opposite Robert Downey Jr. (of Iron Man fame) but with schedule conflicts, the reins were handed over to Will Ferrell, Brad Pitt, Tina Fey, and Jonah Hill (of How to Train Your Dragon fame). Fast forward a few years, and tons of creative liberties and enhancements, and Megamind is now hyping up, ready for theaters on November 5th. The CG and 3D Paramount Pictures film is set to make its mark on the comic book world of movie fans today, but many have asked if it can differentiate itself from Despicable Me, which features similar tones. What are your thoughts?
