Shrek Character Designer to Direct Monster Hunt

Shrek’s character designer Raman Hui, who also co-directed the third installment in the popular DreamWorks franchise, will be making his live-action feature directing debut with a new Chinese 3D Fantasy film, Monster Hunt. The film is said to be budgeted at $30 million and is backed by Hong Kong’s Edko Films.

Monster Hunt is set in a fictional world where humans and monsters have been waging wars against each other for generations, focusing on the last royal bloodline of the monster king, Woba, and his quest to bring peace to the two warring races.

New Shrek Movie Planned

The last Shrek Movie, Shrek Forever After, only grossed $239 million dollars at the domestic box office back in 2010. That’s a respectable take for most movies, but considering the take of its predecessors, it’s a disappointment for the studio. So it’s a surprise that DreamWorks is planning to revive the franchise via a new installment to the series.

DreamWorks’ CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg has recently talked about a new Shrek film, and seemed confident about the prospect of reviving the franchise:

According to a recent report by Daily Variety, DreamWorks Animation has seen a 26% boost in revenue of $136 million, which raises their profits to $9.1 million for the first quarter of 2012. The boost comes from the healthy box office and home-entertainment performance of the Shrek spinoff, Puss in Boots, which managed to gross over $554 million in worldwide box office to date as well as contribute $73.6 million of revenue to the quarter.

Dreamworks Investors Disappointed by Puss N’ Boots Opening Week

The news may be confusing at first, but in spite of Dreamworks Animation’s Puss in Boots topping the box office, its meager box office earnings are resulting in a lot of head scratching amongst Dreamworks Animation’s investors. Shares in Dreamworks has fallen by 8 percent last Monday, after news of Puss in Boots disappointing $34 million opening week. It was good enough to make it No. 1 at the box office, but it falls below the amount needed in order for the film to make a profit, which made it perform well below the investors’ expectations.

But ABC would like to remind you to get home before too late, in order to catch the annual airing of the new animated classic Scared Shrekless. In a weekend where the Shrek franchise is already hyped up once again thanks to the new Puss in Boots cinematic adventure, Scared Shrekless brings Team Green on a series of haunted story adventures, with Shrek hoping to prove that nothing can scare an Ogre. The special spooks ABC on Monday, October 31st – Halloween night – at just before 8pm (listed as “7:58pm” – two extra minutes of scary!)
