Review: Disney’s Sleeping Beauty – Diamond Edition Blu-Ray, Digital HD

Last October 7, Disney once again opened its vaults in order to release their iconic take on the classic fairy tale, Sleeping Beauty, as a Diamond Edition superset, which includes Blu-Ray, Digital HD, and VOD via Disney Movies Anywhere. The release is notable enough on its own, but made even more so by the fact that it marks the first time the film will be released on Digital HD, with polished sound and picture quality that will make it fit in with modern releases.

Disney Changes Maleficent Release Date

It seems like Disney is meticulously rearranging their slate in order to optimize the returns. We have previously heard of the change in Pirates of the Carribean 5’s release date, now it’s the Angelina Jolie-starrer Maleficent.

According to Walt Disney Studios’ announcement, the live action Sleeping Beauty spin-off will be released on May 30, 2014 – a little bit earlier than the original July schedule. The film focuses on the origin of the villain, specifically the series of events that hardened her heart and drove her to put a curse on the baby Aurora. The film stars Angelina Jolie as Maleficent, Sharlto Copley, Elle Fanning, Sam Riley, Imelda Staunton, Miranda Richardson, Juno Temple and Lesley Manville.

Fanimation: From Disney World to Sin City

Fanimation: From Disney World to Sin City

Nearly a century ago, a man named Walt Disney dreamt up his iconic Mickey Mouse, which would later flourish into cartoons, movies, mascots, and, literally, a whole World of Disney, where everything was bright and cheery and forever known as the happiest place on earth. A few decades ago, a man named Frank Miller dreamt up his iconic Sin City, which would later flourish into a comic book graphic novel, movies, sequels, and, figuratively, a whole city of sin, where everything was black and white and forever known as the grim and grittiest place on earth. So what would happen if the two concepts collided…? The result is the fan-made Disney’s Sin City

Discuss Disney's Tangled with Byron Howard and Nathan Greno

We’re lucky. We’re smack dab in the middle of a golden era of animation. There are dozens of cartoon channels, all types of animated films, and even a variety of animation formats, from CG to stop motion to traditional cel animation. As fans, this is a glorious time for all of us. So just imagine how amazing it must be to be part of the animation process! That’s just what lucky and talented folks like Byron Howard and Nathan Greno get to brag about, as two pair of directors finish off projects like Disney’s recent film, Tangled, now available on Blu-ray and DVD. Read this this Q&A segment with the Disney team, and get a glimpse of this golden era from their eyes.

So long, Snow White; Disney too Tangled in fairy tales

So long, Snow White; Disney too Tangled in fairy tales

In roughly two weeks, Disney will bring Tangled home to Blu-ray and DVD. As the 50th animated feature in the Walt Disney Animated Classics series, Tangled is a retelling of the classic Grimm Brothers fairy tale Rapunzel. Though it generated over $500 million, it’s lofty $260 million budget makes it the second most expensive film of all time – perhaps enough so to have Disney avoid fairy tales, all together. Disney Animation heads Ed Catmull and John Lasseter have already squashed two films in development, “The Snow Queen” and “Jack and the Beanstalk.” Could the days of Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Ariel, and Jasmine be over in favor of the new wave of Toy Story, Cars, Bolt, and UP? Would you want it that way?

Waking Sleeping Beauty, Disney’s rebound to The Little Mermaid

Waking Sleeping Beauty, Disney's build to The Little Mermaid

Last week, fans were invited to learn one of the greatest Disney stories ever – not Rapunzel’s Tangled (though that was a great film!) – this time, it’s the story-behind-the-story that has us fascinated. Waking Sleeping Beauty notes Disney’s past 20 years, with The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, Toy Story, UP, The Princess and the Frog, etc. Mickey’s early years had just as much with Snow White, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Pinocchio, Dumbo, Bambi, etc. But the years between those two eras were often dark and disappointing for the House of Mouse. Waking Sleeping Beauty, available since November 30th, helps bridge that gap, telling the story of Disney’s rebound to a new golden age. Truly an amazing DVD – and certainly something to add to your wish lists this year!

Could Tim Burton take on Sleeping Beauty after Alice in Wonderland

Could Tim Burton take on Sleeping Beauty after Alice in Wonderland

Tim Burton knows cinematic success. Disney ain’t too shabby either. Recently, the two paired to recreate one of the Magic Kingdom’s animated classics, Alice in Wonderland, to phenomenal success. With a full stable of other blockbusters in their lineup, it’s not too surprising that the grouping could work together once more on another film — and rumors point to Sleeping Beauty. The tale features a jilted sister named Maleficent, one of the scariest toons of all time, who is so ticked off that she didn’t get an invite to Aurora’s birthday, she turns into a dragon and tries to squash her. Well, not exactly, and we may have skipped a bit of the story, but those are some pretty key moments. What do you think, can Burton work his magic again? And would Johnny Depp play Prince Charming?
