NYCC Interview: MAD’s Kevin Shinick

Kevin Shinick Interview at New York Comic Con 2012

In January, 2007, Seth Green hired Kevin Shinick to be a writer on Adult Swim’s Robot Chicken and their Robot Chicken: Star Wars specials. There, Shinick voiced many of the show’s characters and worked his way up to being Creative Director until he left in 2009.

While at Robot Chicken, Shinick met fellow writer Hugh Davidson, who left to reboot Looney Tunes for Warner Bros. Animation. They were looking to create an animated sketch comedy show for teens and pre-teens based on MAD magazine for Cartoon Network and Davidson suggested Shinick. Shinick wrote the pilot and has been the showrunner/producer/head writer/voice director and most frequent voice talent for MAD ever since. The show debuted in September, 2010, the same month he won an Emmy for his work on Robot Chicken, and even more importantly, became a first-time dad to daughter, Maisy.

Ultimate Spider-Man spins a web for Marvel

Ultimate Spider-Man spins a web for Marvel

What happens you bring Marvel Comics together with the Man of Action team? That is, the folks behind the Wolverine, Iron Man, Ben 10, Generator Rex, and Ultimate Alien? Spidey Sense tingling!! That’s right, the result is the upcoming Ultimate Spider-man cartoon, bringing the Disney superhero to Disney XD later next year. Just as Marvel readies the relaunch of Peter Parker on the big screen in the summer of 2012, super villains like the Green Goblin and Venom will be trying to take over the animated world, as well. As we learned from a Spider-Man sneak peek showing during C2E2 2011, the new toon takes place in the early days of Spiderman’s run, where the Web Slinger is still getting used to his powers, turning to supporting characters like Nick Fury to become The Ultimate Spider-Man.

Geez, it’s just not an easy time to be Spider-Man. First, Broadway announces the (temporary?) closing of Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark. Now, Marvel seems to have had their fill of Peter Parker as the lead character all together! Starting with Ultimate Spider-Man issue 160, someone new will be wearing the Spider-Man costume. In fact, someone new will be wearing something new, as the whole Spidey suit gets an update. The sleek black and red design was just recently revealed, ready to put into practice this summer after issue 159’s “Death of Spider-Man” storyline. Yeesh! So who is the new wall crawler, web-slinger, man behind the mask? It’s a mystery, so far. As is the future of the classic Spidey, Peter Parker.

Sneak Peek at Marvel’s The Ultimate Spider-Man

The Ultimate Spider-Man

At C2E2 2011, Spidey has taken a starring role. Not just the latest comic book adventures, and not just with the upcoming film relaunch – Marvel’s Web Head is jumping into an all new animated series, The Ultimate Spider-Man, and the lucky folks in attendance were able to get the first glimpse sneak peek of the toon in action. Thankfully, we had a few well planted ToonBarn spies in the audience, ready to bring you the visuals of the Man of Action series, whose producers include comic book legends like Paul Dini, Jeph Loeb, and Brian Michael Bendis. We’ve got J. Jonah Jameson continuing his campaign against Spider-Man, Mary Jane Watson hard at work, and Spidey addressing crimes in the Marvel icon’s typical fashion. With great power comes great responsibility, both of which lead to great animation. Check it out!

Spider-Man, Turn Off the Dark – the on-again, off-again musical set to hit Broadway stages – is back. The upcoming show, with music and lyrics by U2’s Bono and The Edge, follows the story of teenager Peter Parker, whose unremarkable life is turned upside-down when he’s bitten by a genetically altered spider. This bullied science geek, suddenly endowed with astonishing powers from the spider’s bite, soon learns that with great power comes great responsibility as villains test not only his physical strength but also his strength of character. Originally penned as a book by Julie Taymor and Glen Berger, the musical takes the Marvel Comics superhero to the stage, starring Reeve Carney as Peter Parker and Spider-Man.  Now fans can grab tickets in a special pre-sale offer through August 18th.  Check out the below poster for more details!

Stan Lee chats about Marvel's Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions video game

When Activision and Disney’s Marvel get together, good things happen. This time around, it’s the upcoming Spider-Man game, Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions. In this game, due out September 7th, players can work through four different dimensions of the Spider-Man mythos; the Marvel world (home to the Amazing Spider-Man), Noir (a 1930s version of Spider-Man), Spider-Man 2099 (the Spider-Man of a possible future), and Ultimate Spider-Man (where Spidey is currently bonded with the Venom symbiote). The mastermind behind most of Marvel’s creations, Stan Lee, recently sat down to pass a few words on the upcoming Nintendo DS, PC, Nintendo Wii, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 game. Take a look at what he has to say, true believers!

Marvel picks a new Spider-Man, Andrew Garfield thwips for Disney and Columbia

Spider-Man has found a new face to wear beneath the mask! Andrew Garfield has been cast as the new Peter Parker and Spidey in the next installment of the Marvel super franchise. Along with Disney and Columbia Pictures, Marvel welcomes in the twenty-six year old, who replaces the former title-holder, Tobey Maguire. It’s been 5 months since Tobey got the boot (the web?) with reportedly just 2 years until “A.G.” makes his debut in theaters, with the latest Spider-Man film to launch July 3rd, 2012 – in Spidey-Sense 3D, of course. Filming begins later this year, written by James Vanderbilt and directed by the appropriately named Marc Webb.

Marvel Entertainment and Disney are expanding their horizons with everyone’s favorite web-headed wall-crawler, Spider-Man. In a partnership with Reebok, shoe-maker extraordinaire, Spider-Man will be gracing sneakers later this year, with the footwear available at Finish Line stores nationwide starting in the next few weeks. Disney has made it’s way to the soul (ha!) of the issue before, with sneakers featuring Mickey Mouse, Goofy, and other Disney icons, just as Ben 10 has had his own sneaker involvement in the past. No word yet on whether or not these sneakers will give you the ability to walk up the sides of buildings, or if the laces could double as webbing to swing from rooftop to rooftop, but… we doubt it.
