Coca-Cola breathes fire on Super Bowl XLV

Coca-Cola breathes fire on Super Bowl XLV

As we’ve shown over the past few days, last week’s big game, Super Bowl XLV, brought a lot to the table in the world of animation. Rango, Rio, Eminem, and others helped show how toons can shine during the year’s most popular media event. Coca-Cola has been a long-time advertiser, with commercial spots appearing during almost every Super Bowl in the history of the game. However, outside of the famous polar bear scenes, it’s rare that the soda company drifts from traditional footage with live action actors. But not this year — this time around Coke came ready with the dragon-sized big guns with the “Siege” spot. It depicts a Lord of the Rings like battle scene, starting with monsters and ending in fireworks. Check it out!

Blue Sky Studios’ Rio spreads wings during Super Bowl XLV

Blue Sky Studios' Rio spreads wings during Super Bowl XLV

Super Bowl XLV would not have been complete without an updated teaser of Blue Sky Studios and 20th Century Fox’s April 15th film, Rio. Blu (voiced by Jesse Eisenberg) is a nerdy, cowardly, shy blue macaw, living at a bookstore in Moose Lake, Minnesota. …at least until scientists learn that this endangered species has a potential mate in South America. It’s there, in Rio de Janeiro, that Blu meets Jewel (voiced by Anne Hathaway — the soon-to-be Catwoman Selina Kyle) the only female blue macaw left. Unfortunately, the process of love isn’t as easy as the scientists would believe, and Blu must overcome his fears to win Jewel’s heart. Rafael the toucan (voiced by George Lopez) does his best to help things along, while Nigel the cockatoo (voiced by Jemaine Clement) does his best to prevent the situation, and bring every bird back to his poacher masters. Claymation Eminem gets Brisk at Super Bowl XLV

Claymation Eminem gets Brisk at Super Bowl XLV

Animated Eminem. Animnem. …Eminated? I don’t know, there’s gotta be some sorta funny and brief tag to give to the latest Brisk commercial featuring a stop-motion, claymation Eminem. What are we going on about? Lipton Brisk, Pepsi’s iced tea soft drink, recently ran a commercial spot during Super Bowl XLV, catching everyone’s attention with the stand-out use of claymation. Former celebrities (and celebrity parodies) to appear in Brisk’s clay-line include: Bruce Lee, Danny DeVito, Ozzy Osbourne, and Bruce Willis. Marshall Mathers’ take was certainly a little more aggressive, but that seems to fit with Brisk’s bolder edge. Take a look at the latest spot, and let us know what you think

Kung Fu Panda 2 Super Bowl Spot

Kung Fu Panda 2 Super Bowl Spot

May 26th is going to change things. At least as far as animals with martial arts training go. Whatwever the case, it’s on that date of this year that DreamWorks will release Kung Fu Panda 2: The Kaboom of Doom, the CG sequel to 2008’s original Kung Fu Panda. And the film got the biggest official nod one could get, with it’s very own commercial spot during Super Bowl XLV. Now a kung fu master, Po will fight alongside Master Shifu and The Furious Five (Monkey, Crane, Tigress, Viper, and Mantis) to defeat Lord Shen. But the group wont be alone, teaming with Thundering Rhino, Soothsayer, and Croc to tackle the evil emperor peacock. You hear that, NBC! Check out the spot, and the official trailer!

Rango commercial appears at Super Bowl XLV

Rango commercial appears at Super Bowl XLV

Super Bowl Sunday isn’t quite a holiday, but maybe it should be. At least enough so to get us all the day off on the following Super Bowl Monday! But if there’s one reason why we’re more than happy to head to school and work the next day, it’s to chat about all the awesome commercial spots that aired the night before during the game. The case of Super Bowl XLV is no different, with Rango making a star appearance around half time. The CG film, a joint venture between Nickelodeon Movies, Blind Wink, GK Films, Industrial Light & Magic, and Paramount Pictures, stars Johnny Depp as the voice of Rango, a pet chameleon who ventures to an Old West town called Dirt. It’s there that he must prove himself a hero, or dying trying. Check out the trailer commercial spot!

NFL brings Rush Zone: Guardians of the Core to Nick

NFL brings Rush Zone: Guardians of the Core to Nick

It’s not often that you see a partnership between the National Football League and a cartoon producing powerhouse like Nickelodeon teaming up on a project, so when they do, you know it’s going to be special! In this case, we have a brand new animated short-form series that the NFL will bring to Nicktoons called Rush Zone: Guardians of the Core. The toon stars Ishmael, your average 10 year old boy, with some not-so-average abilities and responsibilities — he is tasked with protective the various NFL stadiums, which house the powerful flow of positive life energy — all from the grasp of the villainous Sudden Death. Many players and coaches will be stopping by on occasion to help out, including Eli Manning and Sean Payton, amongst others. The series Kick Off (literally!) is this September, leading to a 1-hour movie finale the day before Super Bowl XLV, Saturday, February 5th.

Avatar's The Last Airbender gets a third trailer from Nickelodeon

Since we got a great look at the film in action during the Super Bowl, we’ve been truly excited to finally get to see M. Night Shyamalan’s The Last Airbender. Based on Nickelodeon’s American-made, manga-styled anime Avatar: The Last Airbender, the upcoming movie is a rich mix of live action and CG effects. Produced by Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies, the film features the elemental based world of Air, Water, Earth, and Fire threaten to tear life apart until Aang discovers he is the lone Avatar, with the power to manipulate all four elements. Take a look at the just-released third trailer for the film and let us know what you think!

The Last Airbender’s new trailer

The Last Airbender's new trailer

Last week, theaters welcomed Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief to the box office; and warmly, we might add. More importantly to us, however, was that the film included the newtrailer to M. Night Shyamalan’s upcoming film The Last Airbender – longer than the trailer shown during the Super Bowl. The story, based on Nickelodeon’s Avatar The Last Airbender, tells the tale of Aang, a 12-year-old boy (played by Noah Ringer) who provides the last hope for restoring harmony to a land consumed by chaos. Take a look at the trailer right here and see for yourself!

Super Bowl XLIV today, Saints versus the Colts

Super Bowl XLIV today, Saints versus the Colts

Today is the day, Super Bowl XLIV. Day-long hype will build the story of the New Orleans Saints and the Indianapolis Colts doing battle on the field, a true grid iron classic. While any football reference instantly brings the toon image of Lucy and Charlie Brown of Peanuts fame to my mind, I’m very much looking forward to enjoying the game today. Well, the game, and the commercials! Have you guys picked a team yet? Is it the standard answer of “well, the Colts have Peyton, but we want ‘Nawlins to win!” ? What say you!!
