The Incredibles will get a sequel when Brad Bird feels like it

The Incredibles will get a sequel when Brad Bird feels like it

It seems like a mean thing to say, but the headline is exactly what you can get out of Brad Bird’s recent interview with Movies.com. Bird says that even though The Incredibles is the one film among Pixar’s lineup that is most ripe for a follow up, there is a very good reason why a sequel has not yet materialized. Namely, he hasn’t been working on one. Brad further clarifies that he hasn’t been working on one not because he’s having trouble coming up with a story, it’s simply that he’s currently not pursuing a sequel. Bird adds that he is indeed interested in making a follow-up to the hit superhero-oriented family film, but maintains that he must be the one to write it, instead of turning it over to Pixar’s talented Brain Trust of filmmakers. Fortunately, Bird says that Pixar agrees and wants the same thing.

Disney and Pixar’s The Incredibles Review

Disney and Pixar's The Incredibles Review

For the past ten or fifteen years, it is undeniable how popular CG animated toons have been; the Toy Story franchise, Shrek, How to train your Dragon, Cars, Madagascar, etc, etc. In that same span of time, it is similarly clear that this is also the age of the super hero; The Batman and Dark Knight films, Spider-Man, X-Men and Wolverine, Iron Man, Captain America, etc. So, in 2004, Disney teamed with Pixar to release what would seemingly be the perfect storm collaboration: The Incredibles, a CG animated film about super heroes. Seven years later, the package is ready for home viewing on the highest of definitions, Blu-ray, asking us the question “how was it?” In a ridiculously cliched description; Incredible.

Today, April 12th, is a good day. For all of you Disney fans out there, for all of you Pixar fans out there, for the Super Hero fans out there… The Incredibles are coming home to Blu-ray and DVD. There have been a number of comic book style films over the years, and The Incredibles are difficult to overlook for being amongst the Dark Knights and X-Mens of our day. The same can be said when ranking the top animated films; maybe the Lion King is champ, maybe Tangled or Shrek have set new bars, but The Incredibles is easily fighting for the spot. And after years of waiting patiently for the blockbuster, where all the movie has done is grown in popularity through video rentals, we’re finally, FINALLY, getting the flick today in a Blu-ray HD edition. Disney’s Day & Night short before Pixar’s Toy Story 3

Disney's Day & Night short before Pixar's Toy Story 3

Pixar is not only world famous for it’s amazing CG feature length films, they’re also well regarded for their powerful animated shorts; brief, several-minute toons that can stand on their own at festivals, or, more recently, quick specials that appear before the longer movies. Through the Incredibles, Finding Nemo, Up, and Wall-E, we’ve seen shorts like Presto, For the Birds, Geri’s Game, and more. Disney’s Toy Story 3 debuted a few weeks ago with a brand new short running just before it; Day & Night. The animation features two characters, Day and Night, that act out what their names refer to. For example, Day has a bright sun within him, where as Night has a cool moon. Day is a rainbow; Night is fireworks. Make sense? …not so much? Well check out this “making of” clip, then go see it in theaters with Toy Story!
