Happy Birthday Link! The Legend of Zelda turns 25

Happy Birthday Link! The Legend of Zelda turns 25

25 years ago, Shigeru Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka released the first chapter in one of the most iconic video game franchises of all time, The Legend of Zelda. Mixing puzzles with action and adventure, the series has gone on to sell over 60 million copies across the original Nintendo, Super Nintendo, Game Boy, Nintendo DS, Nintendo Wii and others. At the heart of every adventure is Link, a noble youth set on a hero’s quest, typically to rescue the legendary Princess Zelda from Ganon (aka Ganondorf) an evil super villain. There’s a Triforce, a Master Sword, and dozens of other unique attributes that has transformed the franchise into a powerhouse. But did you also know that there was a a few Zelda cartoon series?

Columbia Pictures looks to revive He-Man and the Masters of the Universe

Columbia Pictures looks to revive He-Man and the Masters of the Universe

Just a few days after learning He-Man has a video game revival on the way, we’re now told we could see a cinematic adventure following the Masters of the Universe. Though we’re still working with early announcements and rumors, Columbia Pictures has said they tasked Mike Finch and Alex Litvak to write a Masters of the Universe reboot based on a Justin Marks script. Recreating the 1980s Filmation cartoon and Mattel toyline wont be an easy process, as a failed Warner Brothers pitch and a unpopular Cartoon Network toon can attest. He-Man’s success in theaters is also up for grabs, as Dolph Lundgren’s 1987 attempt as the Most Powerful Man in the Universe fell short, even before Frank Langella’s Skeletor showed up. Let’s hope for better things this time!

THQ and Mattel are now the Masters of the Universe

THQ and Mattel are now the Masters of the Universe

As if He-Man didn’t have enough to do! THQ and Mattel have joined in a multi-year pact bringing the Masters of the Universe to bring He-Man video games to fans around the globe. No specifics have yet been given on which platforms, or even which era of the heroes (the classic 80s toon, the Cartoon Network relaunch, something new, etc.) the video games will focus on, but its safe to say that they’ll make every effort to a universal (master of the universal?) approach. Skeletor, you may have finally met your match!

Ubisoft’s Raving Rabbids getting their own toon?

Ubisoft's Raving Rabbids getting their own toon?

Recently, Teletoon and Ubisoft teamed to promote Raving Rabbids: Travel in Time, a newly released video game for Nintendo Wii. The promotion helped get people information on the game, as well as a new set of Rabbid figurines, each featured in 15 second spots across cartoons on Teletoon and Teletoon Retro. But maybe there was more to it than hyping video games. Maybe, this was an early test to see how a Rabbids cartoon would stand on it’s own. If you’ve played any of the Rayman or Rabbids games, you’ll know how creepily lovable the little screaming guys are – would you watch an animated series dedicated to them?

Cartoon Network’s Ben 10 Ultimate Alien: Cosmic Destruction out tomorrow

Cartoon Network's Ben 10 Ultimate Alien: Cosmic Destruction out tomorrow

Are you a Ben 10 fan? Are you a video gamer? I bet you think we’re psychic, because obviously the answer to both of those questions is “yes!!” Cartoon Network’s latest Ben 10 series, Ben 10: Ultimate Alien, has been going strong for a while now, with action fans always looking for more. Well, thankfully, Papaya Studio, Cartoon Network, and D3 Publisher heard you! Together, the trio is releasing Ben’s latest video game tomorrow, Ben 10 Ultimate Alien: Cosmic Destruction. 17 playable characters, including Ben, are yours to control as you travel to real-world locations (like Tokyo, Paris, and Rome) hunting ancient Galvan artifacts to save the Earth from destruction. Thankfully, the Ultamatrix is on your side! Check out a clip of the game in action!

Mr. Men and Little Miss on your Nintendo DS

Mr. Men and Little Miss on your Nintendo DS

Cartoon Network’s happy little critters, Mr. Men and Little Miss, will be heading to your Nintendo DS, Nintendo DSi, and the rest of the extended DS family – minus their yet-to-be-born little brother, Nintendo 3DS. However, we’re not talking about a video game! An accessory company named Blaze has created the perfect protector case for your handheld gaming system, completely adorning in a style of the Mr. Men and Little Miss characters. We’d love to see a lot more of these cross overs – maybe a rubbery DS stylus in honor of Adventure time? Or a green DS with a eye mask, ala Ninja Turtles…?? Can you think of any others?

PokeFans create trailer for Pokemon Apokelypse

PokeFans create trailer for Pokemon Apokelypse

Maybe Youtube isn’t the video haven it was a few years ago, but it’s still a phenomenal place for fan created projects. Whether its some sorta MEME or AMV, or in this case, even the more intricate fan-made trailers. Pokemon Apokelypse might be one of the better examples we’ve ever seen of this concept, taking the Pokemon concept from the trading card game, the video games, and, of course, the animated series and faux-producing a real-looking movie trailer out of it. Even to the extent of including all of the key concepts of the hit, from Ash’s hat, to the Pokeball, the slogans (gotta catch’em all!), the enemies, to the Pokemon, themselves. So, OK, sure, this is just a fan created version of Nintendo’s pocket monster franchise, but… it looks like all the seeds are there to make something legit of it. Check it out and tell us what you think!

Naruto Dragon Blade Chronicles heads to Nintendo Wii

Naruto Dragon Blade Chronicles heads to Nintendo Wii

On November 16th in the States (and November 26th in Japan) Atlus will release the latest title in Naruto’s long history of video games; Naruto Shippuden: Dragon Blade Chronicles. The game puts players in the perspective of Naruto, himself – or Sasuke, if you prefer. You’ll battle your way through the field, saving the world from Elemental Dragons called Genryu. All the while, you’re treated to original storyline elements, giving you the bonus equal to new episodes of your favorite Naruto animated series. With two months to go before it’s release, there’s still plenty of time to apply some polish to this Nintendo Wii game, making sure the Cartoon Network hero gets his proper due! Check out some scenes from the game

Cartoon Network gets hyped for the Ben 10 Ultimate Alien: Cosmic Destruction video game

Cartoon Network gets hyped for the Ben 10 Ultimate Alien: Cosmic Destruction video game

Ben has a pretty cool gig. I mean, he’s had, what, three shows so far? Ben 10, Ben 10: Alien Force, and Ben 10: Ultimate Alien. He’s had specials, movies, live-action segments, great LEGO toys, and all kinds of products. But one of the only ways to truly get a sense of just how cool it is to live Ben Tennyson’s life is to get your hands on a Ben 10 video game. Papaya Studio, Cartoon Network, D3 Publisher, and the rest of the folks behind the latest gaming adventure, Ben 10 Ultimate Alien: Cosmic Destruction, had that specific goal in mind – and it appears the goal was achieved! The game, due out in just a month, on October 5th, features 17 playable characters, including normal aliens, ultimate aliens, and Ben, himself — Fourarms and Rath will appear in special editions. Be sure to check out the trailer right here in this post, then pick the game up for whatever platform you have: PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, PSP, Xbox 360, Nintendo DS, or Nintendo Wii.
