Disney, Marvel's X-Men: First Class tops box office

In it’s first weekend to theaters, X-Men: First Class took the top spot from contenders like The Hangover Part II and Nickelodeons Kung Fu Panda sequel, Kung Fu Panda 2. Disney’s movie about Marvel’s Mutants took home $56 million in the three day span, an impressive start, though about $30 million shy of the last film in the franchise, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which clawed $85 million. As the world of super heroes across the Marvel universe slowly creep their way into film, largely anticipating a mass crossover with next years Avengers, it’s good to see that the original super team of mutants can hold their own. Marvel’s X-Men franchise has seen 4 movies to date; X-Men in 2000, and sequels X2 and X-Men: The Last Stand (in 2003 and 2006, respectively) as well as last year’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Each has pulled in about $200 million, fueling the super hero genre for Disney’s newest acquisition. Now, producer Fox Studios has plans to bring the series back for a 5th film, dubbed X-Men: First Class. A release date has been set for June 3, 2011, and Matthew Vaughn will take the director role, running with a script idea by Bryan Singer. No casting news has been recovered yet, nor even a list of Mutants, but we’ll be sure to keep you updated. Stay TOONed!
