A couple of months back, we shared information about a brand new series starring the Ninja Turtles. Titled Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Nickelodeon’s upcoming 2D-animated series now has a voice cast.

Omar Miller (Ballers) as Raphael
Ben Schwartz (Parks and Recreation) as Leonardo
Josh Brener (Silicon Valley) as Donatello
Brandon Mychal Smith (You’re The Worst) as Michelangelo
Kat Graham (The Vampire Diaries) as April O’Neil
Eric Bauza (Lego Star Wars) as Master Splinter

Rob Paulsen, who previously voiced Donatello in the 2012 series and Raphael in the original, will be the voice director on Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

From left to right: Kat Graham (April O’Neil), Josh Brener (Donatello),
Omar Miller (Raphael), Brandon Mychal Smith (Michelangelo) and Ben Schwartz (Leonardo).

The principal voice cast was chosen due to their comedy chops, as Nickelodeon is re-imagining the franchise to include lots of “humor, loads of action and a dynamic look, and it’s packed with all new heroes, villains and cityscapes for the Turtles to explore.” In this iteration, the roles of the turtles are slightly switched around:

Raphael, as the oldest and physically biggest brother, he is now the leader and his enthusiasm and bravado puts him front and center for most of their bizarre adventures; Leonardo, the self-professed ‘coolest’ brother possesses irreverent charm and a rebel heart; Donatello, an unflappable mechanical genius and tech wizard whose ninja skills are second only to his coding; Michelangelo, the youngest brother, an artist and awesome skateboarder with a wild colorful, and imaginative personality; and the Turtles’ most trusted ally, April O’Neil, a street savvy native New Yorker who is always ready to join in the fun.

Nickelodeon has also shared this logline for the 26-episode first season:

Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles follows Raphael, Leonardo, Donatello and Michelangelo on all-new adventures as they seek to unlock the mystical secrets of New York City. From the tallest skyscraper to the dankest sewer drain, the Turtles will encounter absurd new mutants and battle bizarre creatures all while enjoying their favorite slice of pizza. Tapping into mystic, ninja powers they never knew existed, the four brothers must learn to work together and navigate the perils of the modern age and hidden realms in order to fulfill their destiny to become a team of heroes.

The series is co-executive produced by Andy Suriano (character designer, Samurai Jack) and Ant Ward (supervising producer, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) at Nickelodeon in Burbank, Calif.

Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is set to debut on Nickelodeon in 2018.

For this year’s Upfront Presentation, Nickelodeon announced the return of Leo, Raph, Mikey, and Don via a new 26-episode 2D animated (yay!) series tentatively titled “Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.”

Slated for a Fall 2018 launch, the new series will be executive produced by Samurai Jack character designer Andy Suriano and current TMNT series supervising producer Ant Ward. The series will be developed at Nickelodeon’s Burbank Studios.

Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja turtles will see the four heroes in a half shell trying to unlock the mystical secrets of New York City, all the while encountering absurd new mutants and bizarre creatures. Of course, their fondness for pizza will still be a factor, but new to the series is the concept of mystic, ninja powers that the quartet never knew existed will be discovered and tapped into, helping the heroes in their fight against things that go bump in the night.

“The Turtles is a property that has reinvention in its DNA, which keeps it fresh and relevant to every new generation while satisfying the demand from its adult fans,” said Zarghami. “Turtles has been an incredibly important franchise for us since we reignited it five years ago, and we’re excited for the new series to take the characters in a different direction with more humor, a younger and lighter feel and all-new dimensions to explore.”

If 2018 seems too far away for you, a new season of the current CG-animated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series will be premiering this coming Sunday, March 19 at 9am ET/PT on Nickelodeon. Cowabunga!

The new time-traveling episode of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will set the radical worlds to collide on March 27, Sunday at 11 a.m. ET/PT. The 30-minute episode entitled Trans-Dimensional Turtles features the voice cast of the 1980s TMNT cartoon Rob Paulsen, Cam Clarke, Townsend Coleman and Barry Gordon as the modern day Turtles who are transported to another dimension where they meet their 1980’s alternate reality counterparts. Also, actor Pat Fraley will be reunited with the classic toon cast to reprise his character as Krang.

The episode follows the eight Turtles in joining the forces to fight the ‘80s Krang and Kraang Subprime. After encountering their retro equivalents in a 2D animation world, the whole crew goes back to the CG animation dimension, which will give their new friends a feel of their 3D realm. The episode will also offer a preview of the Turtles in a comic-book world that resembles the Mirage Studios comic series (Kevin Eastman).

Fans can click on Nick.com to play a new game set in the 1980s Turtles’ world: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Kickin’ It Old School starting March 21. Players can travel all over the city streets and across the rooftops charging through Foot Ninjas in order to diffuse all the dimensionizers planted by Krang.

The 4th season of the present-day Turtles follows the heroes on an exciting journey through outer space. Joined with a cyborg named Fugitoid (David Tennant), the Turtles dash through space, encounter weird alien creatures and fight galactic monsters in a chase against time to save planet Earth.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles features the voices of Sean Astin as Raphael, Seth Green as Leonardy, Greg Cipes as Michelangelo, Rob Paulsen as Donatello, Mae Whitman as April O’Neal, Kevin Michael Richardson as Shredder, Hoon Lee as Master Splinter, with Corey Feldman as Slash and Josh Peck as Casey Jones. The series presently airs in more than 170 countries.

This is one of the craziest stories I ever heard of, and the year is just getting started.

And maybe its REALLY getting bad in Viacom if they are doing this to a storied franchise…

From NBC News:

Viacom Inc was sued by a former vice president who said the media company fired her in retaliation for opposing its alleged plan to illegally avoid paying U.S. taxes on the international licensing rights for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

In a complaint filed on Tuesday in Manhattan federal court, Nataki Williams said she was fired in April 2014 while on maternity leave, after Viacom ignored her objections to its plan the prior year to transfer Ninja Turtles rights to a Netherlands-based entity solely to avoid the U.S. tax burden.

Williams said the licensing work was handled in New York, but Viacom arranged for minor work to be done in the Netherlands to make it appear as though the contracts were handled there.

The Irvington, New Jersey resident also said Viacom planned for the Netherlands entity to buy rights to other children’s characters like Dora the Explorer and SpongeBob SquarePants, in a scheme that her bosses allegedly said could save millions of dollars.

What in the world is this? They are selling (not as hot, though) well enough. So you mean because the shows have become a tax burden on company, you going to sell the rights to the Dutch so you pay no taxes?

It gets worse folks:

Williams said she was fired as vice president for financial planning and analysis, ending more than six years of employment at Viacom, on the pretext that her benefits paperwork wrongly listed her child’s father, also named Williams, as a spouse.

She said Viacom caused the error, and that she held herself out as single.

“Ms. Williams was actually fired in retaliation for her internal whistle-blowing of an unlawful tax avoidance scheme that would have saved Viacom millions, and that Ms. Williams reasonably believed was fraudulent,” the complaint said.

In a statement, Viacom said Williams was fired for “fraudulently claiming company benefits to which she was not entitled. Her legal claims are completely without merit, and we will vigorously defend against these claims in court.”

So they fired her basically…because of a client on her child’s father? Does any major company in this world does this now?

If you remember, 4Kids sold the rights of the TMNT in 2009 to Viacom for a unknown sum. The movie rights were also moved to Paramount. So now it seems not only the TMNT but their two other Main Franchises (Dora and Spongebob) if this is true, have become tax burdens on the company. I would believe that animation series wouldn’t be such a massive hit on a company, but Viacom maybe in much worse shape than i realized if this scheme is true.

We will have more on this, because just like The VFX Scandals and the Disney-Dreamworks wage collusion scandal its is only the beginning.

Or: How Thundercats (2011) was the end of the North American animation/Kids Business (in a way)

Note: The Opinions shown on this essay does not reflect the views of Toon Barn and its affiliates.

Its Saturday – winter is only a few days away and after that – Christmas on Friday and then – Saturday rolls around again, the next Friday is 2016 and then the first day of the new year – Saturday rolls around again.

But the room is empty.

Children are sleep – or trying to go into lessons of music, art or sport in a what has become a rarity in this late 2015 – frost. Not much snow, not much of a winter. And some on twitter worry that its a bad omen…even those that dont believe in a creator.

Its strange to hear that – those who are my friends on twitter usually are headstrong, racing against those with differing opinions – sometimes in a passive aggressive way, other times for legit reasons, still others to talk in jest, tact etc.

But some say the spirit of Christmas overrides these worries.

They may have been right in a past time – before things changed – some for the better – and some for the worse.

But all changes effect us in many ways.

This year – the Christmas spirit seems to be tempered by the Star Wars machine. And as the new engine of the creation of a “Corporate Safe Space” start in earnest, three films before 2020, many TV series – other animated spots – video games, toys and other trinkets; its more of a cynical promotion of the greatest and most secretive fan fiction ever created.

In any other time – it would have been just one of the many major blockbusters – didn’t effect next weeks numbers or so on. We would have other things to pass the time. But the concept of the “Corporate Safe Space” is much more insidious – it promotes the other products from other companies it competes with as the literal manifestation of evil, and their own product – as the good work – the holy work – the one you turn to when all is lost.

Made simple and plain by this post on twitter:

to people who complain about some movies being too long: do you realize your own garbage life goes on like forever

make good movies last as long as possible. 3 hours, 100 years, forever. put us out of our misery

And Misery loves Company. Its the end as entertainment as a way to relax, and at times to wonder about our human condition, or even to have fun. It now has become a cradle to grave mantra of endless content creation for the content men who via their advertising agencies promote a existence that doesn’t exist in reality.

I could tell other stories. How, why and for what reason things arnt the way it seems anymore. But more often than not – its because people, companies, multi-nationals, educators and even those who were meant to represent us dont. They turn out to be more of a maguffin. A sad fate of madding ideals mixed with the most banal pragmatism.

I just want to focus on us. The fans of animation.

Its hard to deal with but – just because a show has some merit doesn’t mean its good.

We have seen with My Little Pony (and Equestria Girls), Steven Universe – and even the weaker shows such as Regular Show and Gumball – the sense is that they talking above the adults and the children are just asking questions about things that are in the show and they just become so lost. Their fanbases are taken over not just by adults who just love the show by its own merits, but by those who feel the show creates a space where everything else feels lost to them. They didnt develop strength and character even when the show was dark – now as the animated series promote a light hearted fare – it becomes a way to promote all sorts of dank memes and even more politically charged language, and using the concept of sexuality as a way to  ease a man or a womens shadow natures into quiet repose. In the west and most western animation Its a sad, banal attempt to extend ones love of a work of fiction or genre. The east handles this better – and sees it as it is – integration, fashion, technique and embracing the work as is and nothing more or less.

We talk about what happened to Zamii, and the media has done so in many ways. But what people dont realized is that when the creators backed down from comments made by those who wished Zamii dead, it proved to me that nobody knows when to stand their ground and say – enough. It started from the day the Thundercats got canned, to the day that they made the move for Korra, to the issues with Steven Universe and the issues with their fanbase. The Internet given voice, the voice given form and now it has power even over the creators of these shows.

Its because the executives and the fans are from the same economic structure. The creators not only have to cowtow to said executives when it comes to content – which always been a problem for years, now have to deal with the views that has the money. The advertising agencies may aim for most viewers, but we seen now, even despite advertising laws made in order to make sure that children dont become mindless consumers, it just made things worse for all involved.

It has been mentioned before about education and the E/I. I also mentioned about the scandal concerning the lowering of wages and collusion in the theatrical animation sector. Did you know that Ed Catmull  bought a 12 million dollar house? This is after the trial finds out that the Disney board knew about these issues.

Welcome to Poof Poof, Glitter Boots, the force is with us. Netflix is about to spend five Billion dollars on “content creation” while Netflix is overvalued in the stock market by a value of 400X its price. Its the time of complaints of how a animated character looks via the eyes of a fan. Its the time when ratings “dont matter”, its audience share, that # social network outreach, insta connections and all the rest. In a world when ignorance is awarded, all those who run entertainment – and in animation, “create”and manufacture the look and feeling of a inglorious look. Not for satire, not even to make fun of the world – but to create safe spaces that don’t challenge the characters, nor the setting – and most important the viewers.

Increasingly, the Holiday classics take more importance. Years ago, they were apart of a extended program of network kids shows and which many popular shows joined in specials during the weeks leading up to Christmas. Today these holiday specials stand as the guard of a time long  past. For the shows now air on Cartoon Network/ Nick and Disney XD  are now run by feckless creators, some who feel that kowtowing to powers and those that perceive they have power, only hurts the show in the end of the day. They are not creators, they are PR men, propaganda for either a education mandate that doesn’t work, a form of social uplifting of the misfits of the world that doesn’t uplift anything but Pateron accounts and Kickstarter Funds, and content that all dines in the mesh and morrass of pesudo-scarlet letter trigger warnings, slights of political gotcha checks, and all and all out purriance. Its the wonderful world of dung emoji and it been that way since that’s all what the “Corporate Safe Space” will give us.

And in one of the sad ironies of the time, Toys has lost wonder – even Lego uses Japanese culture tropes to sell product. You usually have team ups with diffrent shows in many of a Japanese product – but it doesnt happen in the states…unless you Lego and have more clout than most other franchiser in the kids business.

It even reaches Toonami in a sense. After the announcement that they were bringing back Samurai Jack, Mr Demarco stated he wanted one of the newer Lupin series, Yukyo Mine. Not the best of the Lupin works. But even he was told by the censors he couldn’t. Its strange. Lupin hasnt been apart of American culture – so it becomes to most hardest of sells to even put it on Toonami. Of course he would get Wakfu, but then they are on Netflix.

The fact that a dude who makes Adult Swim money over fist – gets denied a show – while the Creators of the Steven Universe are allowed to get away with everything – and the creators bows down to pressure from people who wish other fans of their show dead, is sad to me. Mine(And Lupin for that matter) isn’t going to cause your network problems, the show you promote next  to the 5th iteration of legendary Looney Toons characters has become more problematic and the fact they don’t see this tells me all i need to know.

They have given up on us. The American people – the American audience. who they feel are too lost in their “common sense” to talk to. We got so many was to view the content – they think its OK to delay shows for months on end. They will watch it again and again, old episodes – six, seven times a week. It will be greater than everything we have done before.

Then the holiday classics come on. The humanity. Coming from puppets, from animation, from the voice overs, the backgrounds. They stood, even when things were being built for children around, and torn down by government edict. Yes, animation is for all.

But at times, the little ones are to be reminded there are things beyond numbers, letters, and such things we as people need to be in the world. They need the journey of the heroes, the power of belief and the joy of overcoming life’s grand trials. And these folks who would easily falter to the hands of those willing to kill don’t understand and never did truly loved the work. They loved the fame, and sold their souls to the oligarchic power structures they trying to fight against and say they are against, but in reality work for them and are in tandem with them.

They are nothing more than the Grinch.

He could be redeemed, but I doubt they can.

Can anybody be redeemed?

Not so.

Thats why these specials, are truly are. They show us were we have fallen – the simple reasons why – and putting complications on it – and excusing it only causes us to lose the plot.

“Baby stuff”, Charlotte said to Virgina there is no Santa.

“Baby stuff”, when those demons said to Zamii when they said to her kill herself – “You know how she looks LIKE!”

But its that spirit of Christmas, that these specials represent show the best of ourselves, the hope in a manger. The hope in a child born in poverty gets the only thing that can get him out of it, a football. The hope in a woman who is homeless – to get 100 bucks from a man, not for favor, but out of his heart and his own reasons. The hope of a man, who after being told after he comes back from war, that the people he fought for calls him names, cishet, warmongerer, etc. That he – suffering from a lost hand, and lost heart and mind, can find a home, an honest job, and finally a smile from a grateful nation.

But for 345 days of the year, America is “We The Spiteful”. It feels more like pity.

We don’t know what we had until its gone.

And these holiday specials remind us every year of what we truly lost, the sense that good will truly win, and hope never truly dies.

They used to be apart of a place children could go.

Now these shows, these specials that only come one time a year, are now the gold standard of the industry.

Its not a popular opinion.

But in the end, the facts remain.

Maybe we adults can never be redeemed.

But Tomorrow isnt not the far away…

And the young must find that tomorrow.

Even if time runs short.

This Saturday and for the foreseeable future of every Saturday, the rooms of the American living room is quiet like the grave…

But its never silent.

Yes, Virgina there is a Santa Claus…

If only they just believe…

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise is a weird one. It was a massive success during the 90s and was able to nurse a healthy fanbase throughout its many iterations, and the franchise is still going strong to this day, save for a few dents because of the 2014 live action/CG film.

However, its success really started from the animated TV series, which is a softened version that is retooled to sell kid-targeted merchandise, much like every single kid’s show at that point in time. This made the much darker source material less famous and known only to comic book fans and those who dug deeper into the franchise (remember that this was before the Internet became a thing.)

For those of us who were weaned on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoons and were blissfully content with what it had to offer, there are a bunch of little known facts about the original comic books that are worth knowing, such as:

#5 The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Was Meant to Be a Parody of Daredevil

While TMNT wasn’t specifically meant to mimic Daredevil’s story structure plot-for-plot, it uses key plot elements from Daredevil’s origin story and sort of tells the story of what happens after the accident that gave Matt Murdoch his powers. For instance, the chemical that blinded and gave the future lawyer enhanced senses is the same chemical that “oozed” down the sewers and mutated the Turtles.

There’s also a lot of references that are easy to catch for someone who’s looking. Master Splinter is a subtle reference to Daredevil’s own mentor, Stick, and The Foot Clan is a more obvious reference to the ninja clan on DD, The Hand.

#4 April O’ Neil Was Not Caucasian

April O’Neil’s iconic look is the one from the TMNT cartoon – Caucasian, red hair, and yellow orange jumpsuit. However, people who believe that Bay crapped all over the franchise when he turned her into Megan Fox might be spending unnecessary negative energy, because the original cartoon April O’Neil isn’t the original look the creators had in mind.

The original Mirage comic portrayed the intrepid reporter with black, curly hair and while black and white comic books make it difficult to identify skin color, Tales of the TMN #7 clearly showed that she had a much darker complexion.

#3 They Caused Hitler to Commit Suicide

The TMNT cartoons from the 90s was too kid-friendly to ever show something blatantly inspired by the Nazis, but Archie’s Ninja Turtles, though still kid-friendly publication, was a lot more liberal in the sense that Ninja Turtles Adventures #64 had the Turtles of the Future traveling through time in order to stop Hitler’s brain from going back in time and joining with his physical self. And they did it by claiming to be demons that have already acquired Hitler’s soul, and are now after his mind. In order to protect his brain, Hitler decided to shoot himself in the head, implying that the Turtles are the main reason for Hitler’s suicide.

    #2 They Killed the Devil

Though the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have a lot of experience fighting aliens and creatures strong enough to bend metal, their main M.O. has always been to deal with “street level” bad guys – basically enemies that you can physically hurt and punch into submission. However, during their Archie Comics run, they fought a horned being named Mr. Null, who claims to be the devil, and his demonic Horsemen of the Apocalypse.

As if fighting the fallen himself is not enough, the Turtles – with the help (and sacrifice) of former villain turned honorary member Slash – killed Mr. Null, but not before the self-proclaimed devil managed to have his henchmen brutally murder the Mighty Mutanimals.

#1 They Were Hitmen, Not Heroes

One of the key defining traits of the TMNT cartoon is that the four turtles are wholesome heroes. They like to have fun, eat pizza, joke around, and their fights never result in a death. In fact, you won’t even see any blood no matter how intense their action scenes get.

However, the original comic from Mirage Studios was very clear when it comes to Splinter’s motivation for training the quartet: Kill Shredder. Because many years ago, Shredder killed Splinter’s owner (oh, did I forget that Splinter was an actual rat in the comics and not a man who turned into a rat?)

And the Turtles did exactly what he wanted. They call Shredder out and proceed to kill all of his ninja henchmen, then they give Shredder a chance to die honorably. But instead of commit seppuku, Shredder tried to bomb him. Not a good idea. The Turtles throw him from the building and he got blown up along with his bomb.

Sunday, August 2nd, all-new August episodes of TMNT on Nickelodeon kicked off with an episode titled, “Turtles in Time.” No, this is NOT the SNES Game from many years ago. This brand new episode found the Turtles getting whisked through time by apprentice Time Master Renet, voiced by Ashley Johnson (The Last of Us, The Avengers), and they all had to work together to defeat the evil Time Master Savanti Romero, voiced by Graham McTavish (The Hobbit Trilogy). Next week’s episode will be titled, “Tale of the Yokai.” You can catch TMNT on Sundays at 11 AM ET, only on Nickelodeon. Hopefully, you had a chance to see today’s episode, and if not, we won’t spoil it for you.

What we will do is show you our Exclusive Interview from San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC), where ToonBarn Head Writer Marc Morrell had the fortune to sit down with 3 of the 4 Ninja Turtles voice actors, Rob Paulsen (Donatello), Greg Cipes (Michaelangelo), and Sean Astin (Rafael). Enjoy!

At SDCC, Nickelodeon announced that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles has been renewed for a 20-episode 5th season and revealed some of the guest voice actors that will be appearing in the upcoming 4th season of the series.

David Tennant (Dr. Who) guest stars as The Fugitoid who was once an alien scientist named Dr. Honeycutt, but after his body was destroyed, his brain was saved and placed into the body of a robot.

Peter Stormare (Fargo) guest stars as Lord Dregg, an arrogant, insectoid crime lord. When the Turtles incur his wrath, he becomes one of their most dangerous enemies.

Michael Dorn (Star Trek) stars as Captain Mozar, the supreme Commander of the Triceraton Fleet. He is a cunning and brutal military commander who answers only to the Triceraton Emperor.

Additional guest stars debuting later this year include: Lance Henriksen (Aliens) as Zog, a scout for the alien Triceraton army; Ron Perlman (Sons of Anarchy) as Armaggon, a vicious, bounty-hunter robo-shark with a taste for turtle; and Zelda Williams (The Legend of Korra) as fan-favorite Mona Lisa, a highly skilled Salamandrian warrior.
