Princess Mononoke is arguably one of the most historically significant animated films to have come out of Japan, and its appeal crosses cultural barriers (having attracted a cult following even in the West, thanks to the dubbed release.) However, it’s not exactly the kind of franchise that would translate well to an SNES-era videogame. It would have required the multimedia capabilities of the 32 bit consoles or newer to give the story’s reliance on fantasy any semblance of justice.
Of course, Youtube videomakers Cinefix decided to prove us wrong. They went ahead and reimagined the Studio Ghibli classic as a 2D 16-bit sidescrolling game, and the results are amazing. I could see myself spending quite a lot of time on this if it were an actual game:
