Voltron Force: Deceive and Conquer Review
Voltron Force: Season 1 has one final episode remaining. We started this season with Sky Marshal Wade in control of the Galaxy Alliance, after Voltron had been banished, and the Voltron Force had become insignificant without their Lions. The Voltron Force had formed an underground resistance against Wade’s tyranny. 3 Cadets joined the ranks of the Voltron Force, and their first mission was to retrieve the keys to 4 of the Lions from Wade himself, while Commander Keith retrieved Black Lion on a solo mission.
Prince Lotor of Planet Doom, who had been re-animated by Maahox using an evil energy called Haggarium, had now become King Lotor. His single goal was to destroy Voltron. Between the various Robeasts sent by Lotor to destroy Voltron, and Wade’s obsession over Voltron, the Voltron Force has had their hands full. Though, Voltron has always triumphed. In many instances, it was the Cadets, and their unique powers, that saved the day.
Now we come to the last episode. There are no longer Cadets. The new Voltron Force, consisting of veterans Lance and Hunk, are now joined by Larmina, Vince, and Daniel. It appears as though Arus will have a King and Queen in Keith and Allura. And even though we think “King Keith” sounds awkward, the Arusians are in good hands. Voltron Force has endured through many battles this season, but one final battle remains against a monster foe: Maahox’s Castle Doom Robeast. This battle will also determine if Daniel will truly be able to lead the Voltron Force, despite his stubbornness and immaturity at the lead position of the team.
For Deceive and Conquer, we start on Planet Doom, where Maahox has finally finished the renovation construction of Castle Doom, and Lotor and Maahox are staring at it, in awe of its Haggarium Crown.
Lotor starts climbing the walls of the Castle to go after the Haggarium he craves. Maahox tries to stop him, attempting to protect the Haggarium that powers the Castle. Maahox is unable to get Lotor to stop. In fact, Lotor fires Maahox from his service and tells Maahox he is no longer his Lord.
Back on Arus, the three men of the Voltron Force were busy discussing which one of them was going to get replaced by Daniel and how were they supposed to know when Daniel was ready. Allura comes in and says that upon learning about Keith’s ancestry on Arus, that maybe it was time for him to join her, as King. Hunk says she is already Queen. Why would she need… ohhhhh (light bulb goes off over Hunk’s head). Keith’s reaction to this is… well, Keith. He totally dodges the question, and deflects to Daniel being ready to lead. As Foghorn Leghorn said, “That boy’s about as sharp as a bowling ball.” Keith doesn’t have a romantic bone in his body, even when Allura looks at him with that “come hither” smile.
Daniel had managed to duck out of the control room with Larmina and Vince. He told them that even though they are now Voltron Force team members, he still didn’t want anyone else to know about his Haggarium infection. He tells Larmina and Vince that they need to work on this together, or he’ll never be able to become a Voltron Force pilot.
Maahox still persists in trying to convince Lotor to refrain from going after the Haggarium, when the Kala/Wade Lider creeps up behind him. Kala wants to destroy Maahox for turning her into what she is. He dodges the Lider’s attack and manages to run away, with the Lider following close behind.
While the Lider is trying to get Maahox, it manages to damage the walls of the Castle. This doesn’t sit well with Lotor, who just got his precious Castle back together again. He confronts the Lider, who tells Lotor he should go back inside the Castle because they are after Maahox, and not Lotor. You can imagine that Lotor was not even remotely happy about this. You might even say it irritated him.
As Lotor gets into a fight with the Lider for insulting him, he is able to move the rocky surface of Planet Doom to whichever shape he wants, using his Haggarium powers. He is able to force many boulders to fall on top of the Lider. All this, while Maahox stands aside and watches his creations fight each other.
Daniel can see these events occurring, through his Haggarium connection he obtained when the Lider infected him, and he knows he has to destroy the Lider, if he has any chance of ridding himself of the infection. He asks if he can count on Larmina and Vince to help him, and they agree.
In the fight between Lotor and the Lider, Lotor becomes overconfident, and the Lider spits a web from its mouth and wraps it around Lotor. Lotor is unable to break free, and the Lider reels him in to its mouth, completely wraps him in Haggarium webbing, and swallows him whole. The Lider then wants to go after Maahox again, but Maahox warns the Lider that it will soon develop a nasty bellyache. Maahox knows that the Haggarium will force the Lider to combine with Lotor.
Daniel is unable to control his pain as this latest vision appears when he is in the control room with everyone else. Lance asks him if he is OK. Daniel says he just stood up too fast. This new information he has learned from his vision is too important not to share with the team. He tells everyone that the Kala/Wade Lider has combined with King Lotor. He says it is happening now on Planet Doom. They are completely shocked and dismayed by this turn of events.
They also wonder just how it is that Daniel knows this. Pidge sees higher than normal levels of Haggarium there on Planet Doom, but nothing that would tell him the Lider teamed up with Lotor. Vince saves Daniel by saying he detected it with his equipment. That seems to satisfy the team’s curiosity completely (Really?). Since time is a factor, Keith sends everyone to the Lions right away. As they all run toward the doors, Allura and Pidge stop themselves short, as they realize they aren’t supposed to be the ones going to Blue and Green Lions. This makes it all a little awkward for Larmina and Vince, until Pidge tells them to “Go get ’em.”
With Daniel riding co-pilot in the Black Lion with Keith, the Lions land at the foot of Castle Doom on Planet Doom.
Daniel sees the new Robeast climbing over the top of Castle Doom. They can’t believe Lotor has combined with the Lider. Hunk, as usual, is the first one to name it. He calls it Loto-Lider. The combination started with Commander Kala and a Spider (Kal-ider?). Then, one of Wade’s failed attempts at a clone of the Voltron Lions combined with it (Kala Lider). Then Wade combined with that (Kala/Wade Lider). Finally, Lotor combined with that, making it a Lotor/Kala/Wade Lider, or Loto-Lider, for short.
Maahox loves it when everything comes together. He almost used a line from Hannibal Smith on the A-Team TV Series from the ’80’s (“I love it when a plan comes together”). He loves it so much that he suggests that his ex-Lord try out his new body on the Voltron Force.
Daniel doesn’t waste any time. He says, “Let’s Voltron!”, which Keith actually thinks is pretty cool. They form Voltron in the usual way. We’ll go through the motions because we’re not sure if they’ll do this in the Season Finale, and we’re feeling nostalgic.

The Loto-Lider immediately charges and punches Voltron back, and Voltron doesn’t look good in the early going. The Loto-Lider uses its spit webbing to grab Voltron and throw him down.
As Voltron is sitting helpless, Keith asks Daniel for some help. Daniel sees a vision of the Loto-Lider’s next move, and he tells Keith to dodge right, and counter left. Keith does this, and Voltron sends the Loto-Lider crashing against a large boulder.
Daniel can’t believe he is inside the head of that beast. He uses it to his advantage. He tells Keith to make Voltron jump to avoid getting knocked down, and Voltron punches again. Daniel tells Keith to quickly Form Yellow Center to counter the moves of the Loto-Lider with the Wrecking Maces.
Then Daniel tells Keith he needs those Magma Pistols, so Keith Forms Red Center. The Magma Pistols come out just in time to destroy a ton of debris sent toward Voltron by the Loto-Lider.
Then, one more Pistol Blast hits the Loto-Lider dead center, sending it crashing back against Castle Doom. Daniel says to keep pressing, because it isn’t down for good. Then, he apologizes to Keith, saying he doesn’t want to act like he’s taking over. Keith gets up from his seat, and says, “Maybe it’s time you did.” Daniel sits down in the “big-boy chair”, as Larmina calls it.
Loto-Lider is reeling, wondering how the “boy” (Daniel) knows his next move. Maahox explains that Haggarium has “curious” properties, and that Daniel may have gotten inside his head. He also lets Loto-Lider know that the connection works both ways. Loto-Lider suddenly sees visions like Daniel does, and can anticipate Voltron’s next move.
This doesn’t bode well for Lance, who is the first one to swing and miss, and then get knocked over. So, Daniel asks for help from Larmina and Vince. Larmina takes the next charge from Loto-Lider and gives it a swift couple of kicks. The Loto-Lider tries to spray some webbing, but Vince and Lance grab it, pull the Loto-Lider toward them, and Lance gives it a right hook.
In the meantime, Daniel is trying to keep his mind clear, and Vince can hear him talking to himself through the telepathy they have with each other. Now Vince knows how Daniel has been one step ahead of the Loto-Lider. So, Vince wants to know what the plan is…and Daniel Forms Black Center and asks Larmina and Vince to plug in their Voltcom Boosts so they will have Super Speed, Kick-Butt, and Power Boosts all at the same time.
This Super Voltron is now able to Form Blazing Sword, come after the Loto-Lider, dodging blasts from it, and jumping high above it, until it comes blasting down, driving the Blazing Sword right through the heart of it.
Vince asks Daniel if the connection was still there with the Loto-Lider, and Daniel tells him it is gone.
Keith shakes hands with Daniel, and we are now back on Arus at a ceremony for making Daniel a Voltron Force Pilot. Keith tells Daniel it’s his show now. “Welcome to the Voltron Force!”
As the crowd cheers on, Keith says, “Here’s to the New Voltron Force, and a Lotor-Free Future!”
Back on Planet Doom, Lotor gets re-animated, with the help of Maahox, and Haggarium, of course. But, he can’t find Maahox right away. Maahox tells Lotor that he is no longer in Lotor’s service, and sends him outside the Castle. Maahox hated to waste the Haggarium to resurrect Lotor again, but he wanted to have Lotor see the “ground-breaking” ceremony for Castle Doom. Maahox no longer has his metal legs. Instead, he has many tentacles, like an Octopus, which he uses to plug into pipes that allow him to control Castle Doom.
Lotor watches as his Castle starts to move off the ground. He can only question, “My… Castle?”, which leads Maahox to reply, “My Robeast.” Then the tentacled robeast slams one of its tentacles down hard on Lotor. We assume he has been eliminated.
As the Castle Doom Robeast flies off the Planet, we see Planet Doom start to break apart. We also assume the planet has been destroyed as well.
