Ever since its July 1st launch, we here at ToonBarn have been covering KidsClick, the new morning broadcast TV cartoon block running everyday of the week. It’s operated by Sinclair Broadcast Group and runs nationally on ThisTV stations, as well as on select local channels owned by the operator. Sinclair promised to refresh the KidsClick content library and they shared with us what’s in store for this season.

The first change in the fall lineup will occur on September 11th as the weekday schedule swaps RoboCop: Alpha Commando with an additional episode of Rocket Monkeys. If Rocket Monkeys isn’t really your thing, don’t worry. KidsClick will air episodes of Winx Club during the weekday 8AM slot starting October 9th.

  • 6:00AM – Rocket Monkeys
  • 6:30AM – Max Steel
  • 7:00AM – Angry Birds
  • 7:30AM – Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir
  • 8:00AM – Rocket Monkeys (replaced by Winx Club starting 10/9)
  • 8:30AM – Super 4

A bigger shake up hits the weekend lineup this fall. On the 16th, multiple shows switch places and Hot Wheels two-parters (starting with Team Hot Wheels: The Skills to Thrill) join KidsClick. But don’t get used to 9AM weekend Angry Birds for long, as on September 30th, KidsClick will begin running the long awaited Zak Storm: Super Pirate in that time slot.

  • 7:00AM – Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventures
  • 7:30AM – Scary Larry
  • 8:00AM – Super 4
  • 8:30AM – Pink Panther and Pals
  • 9:00AM – Angry Birds (replaced by Zak Storm: Super Pirate starting 9/30)
  • 9:30AM – Hot Wheels two-parters

Do note, KidsClick broadcast times may vary per television market. It’s always best to consult your local listings. If you don’t want to do that, KidsClick will also have you covered. Sinclair plans to roll out their video-on-demand mobile apps and websites (which will also feature games) for the block within the month of September.

So, what do you think of the new fall lineup? Are you excited to set sail with Zak Storm? Maybe you’re more interested in enrolling at Alfea and joining the Winx Club? Will you miss Murphy and the rest of RoboCop: Alpha Commando? Leave a comment down below sharing your thoughts on KidsClick.

Thanks go out to Toonbarn reader Jackie, who gave us the tip-off that the spin-off Winx Club WOW: World of Winx has just been released on Netflix. The spin-off was originally given the vague “Fall 2016” release date on the streaming service, but the exact date is no longer important as the show can now be watched to your heart’s content. There are plans to release two seasons’ worth of episodes, with each one consisting of 13 x 22 minute episodes specifically formatted for VOD viewing.

While the target audience is still the same, fans of Rainbow’s extremely popular Winx franchise is in for a surprise as World of Winx will take the property into an entirely new direction: the Winx will go undercover in order to find kids with a gift for the arts, sports, music, and science but they will be hindered by a “dangerours mystery.”

The show also takes on a completely different artistic look, no doubt a result of the change in setting: the show will take place mostly on Earth as opposed to the Magic Dimension, leading to scenes that are more urban and metropolitan than fantastical.

But enough talk, if you’re Netflix subscriber and you want more Winx in your life, you can head on over to the official Netflix page for World of Winx.

Netflix and Rainbow Studios have just announced a new animated series spun-off from the extremely popular Winx Club franchise. Titled “Winx Club WOW: World of Winx,” the new series will be exclusive to Netflix’s service and will be made available to all its supported territories, including France and Germany.

WinX Club WOW has the girls embarking on an undercover journey all over the world as they look for kids with a talent for art, sports, music, and science. The Winx Club fairies are enchanted by these kids’ own kind of magic, but it isn’t long before trouble arrives and a new danger rears its ugly head. It is now up to Bloom and the others to save the day.

Winx Club WOW’s approach to storylines will be more serialized in order to take advantage of Netflix’ on-demand content distribution model. The series is slated for 2 seasons consisting of 13 x 22 minute episodes packed full of Winx Club’s famous mix of magic, friendship, and adventure.

“We are very happy to be building a solid and wide collaboration with Netflix, so extending it to include new and original content is fantastic news,” says Rainbow Group president and CEO Iginio Straffi. “Netflix is an innovative and exciting presence in the field of content distribution and our production teams are busy putting together what will be a brand new and truly magical experience for Winx Club fans across the globe.”

“Winx Club is already a very successful show on Netflix in all our territories; it’s exciting to be expanding our relationship with such a great European animation studio,” said Erik Barmack, Vice President of Content Acquisition at Netflix. “Rainbow Studios has created a very popular global franchise and we’re thrilled to become the home of the next generation Winx Club for all of its current and future fans.”

Toonbarn reader Dane has alerted us to a very important, yet very sad news: it seems like Winx Club is at its end over on Nickelodeon. According to Dane’s message, voice actress Romi Dames (who voices Musa on the show) has already confirmed via her Twitter account that Nickelodeon will not be renewing Winx Club.

Nickelodeon will still be showing the entirety of season 6, and according to Ms. Dames, it’s going to be one hell of an ending. Hopefully, the outpouring of support over at Twitter will show the powers that be over at Nick that Winx Club does have a lot of fans and that the series shouldn’t just end like that.

EDIT: Oblivious Platter pointed out at the comments below:

I’m a Winx Club fan blogger, and I just wanna bring up an important point. Yes, Nickelodeon is canceling Winx, but the show itself will continue. The company that produces it, Rainbow S.r.l., is already working on the next season. We just don’t know if it’ll air in America and who the voice cast will be. Hopefully, the series can find a home on another network, but that’s unlikely.

Tsumanga and Rainbow to Launch New Winx Club Mobile Game

Just in time for Christmas, Tsumanga Studios and Italy’s Rainbow Studios will be releasing a brand new game for Apple and Android devices based on their hugely popular brand, Winx Club. Titled ‘Winx Fairy School,’ the game serves as a follow-up to Tsumanga Studio’s Winx Sirenix Power, which was released last May 2013 and has already garnered over 1.3 million downloads.

In Winx Fairy School, fans of the franchise will be able to create their own fairies-in-training and join the Winx at Alfea College for Fairies, where they will decorate their dorm rooms, choose from hundreds of fabulous fashion combinations, and explore Alfea castle while studying new spells and completing various quests until they become worthy of experiencing the fairy transformation.

WFS_4

“The popularity of Winx Club all around the world is simply phenomenal,” said Graeme Harvey, the CEO of Tsumanga Studios, the developer and publisher of Winx Fairy School. “It has a great audience who really engage with the brand and who really enjoy getting involved with the world of the Winx fairies. Our first game, Winx Sirenix Power let players take part in simple races in an underwater kingdom. Winx Fairy School offers far more with in-depth customisation, multiplayer and social elements building a much richer and more sophisticated experience we believe players will love.”

“We are sure Winx Fairy School will be a great success as for the first time it gives fans across the world the opportunity to create their very own Winx story, enroll to the Alfea College, attend the school of their favorite fairies… all thanks to the strong identification of our fans in their beloved characters.” adds Cristiana Buzzelli, VP, Contents – Digital and Publishing at Rainbow.

Winx Fairy School is due for release in December 2013, initially for Apple iPad and iPhone, with the Android version released shortly afterwards.

Thankfully, Toonbarn has done well to show what has happened to Toonzai/Toonzaki and so on. However, here is a point people tend to forget: 4kids was different from the other kids’ companies that existed during and after the last 10 or so years. You have to realize the type of marketplace that existed when the company was at its peak and when it passed on. The problem with people’s recollection of the history of 4Kids is that it doesn’t tell the whole story about why 4Kids did what it did and what it could have done better.

You see, the only two companies that the big three (Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, and Disney) felt any sort of threat from was 4Kids at one end, and Toonami (when it was apart of the cartoon network) on the other.

Even given an aside, 4Kids respected Toonami for what it was (but im not truly sure if Mr Demarco, now the Senior Vice President of Marketing over in Cartoon Network and Adult Swim – felt the same way about Mr Kahn’s company)

But you have to understand, and people really don’t – 4Kids tried to do different things with animation and anime that many others didn’t really care to do – outside of you guessed it – Toonami (under CN and now under Adult Swim)

There is a form of censorship not only in the anime news media – but in the animation community as well – this affects Saban too in a way – the animator unions (such as Tag 839, which works with both the big three, and well as their owners, the big six – Adding Sony, Universal and Fox) tend to look down upon the non-union (unless you’re in Sag Aftra as they are now called in Voice Acting) because they are Union Busting. (that’s why for a lot of non union work, a lot of Voice Actors have a name change)

However, the censorship got really onerous concerning 4Kids’s bankruptcy. This was a problem, and on a future topic I will go into this in depth.

However, 4Kids did something that others now blame 4Kids for doing.

It brought Japanese “Doga” (also known by its francophone lone word, Anime) to the Masses.

Till this very day, the highest grossing anime movie is still Pokémon The First Movie – 82 Million in the US alone. There is also Yugi-Oh, even though it was no where near the success of Pokémon, was a mega success in its own right.

But if I told you 4kids aired more International works than a lot of the other networks, would you believe me?

Lets look at Funky Cops which first aired in France back in the mid 2000’s.  It was a interesting mix of cgi and cel-shaded animation. And at times it showcased the 1970’s in a interesting light.

How about the Cramp Twins, which aired in Cartoon Network Europe?

The great surprise from the international shows, was the Winx Club. Now here’s something interesting for you. There was another show that Disney had (because – this happened around the same time Sailor Moon aired Super in the states on Toonami) that there was a rush to get more girl power series. While 4Kids was airing the Winx Club franchise (made in Italy by RAI), Disney – after the shock of a stockholders meeting in Philadelphia back in 2004, where Michael Eisner was given pretty much a vote of No Confidence – the next year aired a series called WITCH. This was based on hit books that European girls loved and they felt if 4Kids could do it, Disney could do it.

WITCH only lasted a few episodes.

It was one of the biggest victories for 4Kids.

And not to be out done – The TMNT – which aired in 2003, was regarded as a great show.

The industry was changing and 4Kids was part of the change.

In the later years, they also brought Huntik to the states.

They also created Chaotic (or bought the rights to aspects of a card series that later became that franchise). The later seasons were interesting but expensive.

But what I miss most from 4Kids Entertainment is that they had something different about them. Everybody complains about the editing. True. But the question is why? The Saturday morning blocks were never meant to do the same things content-wise  as a show that aired in late night. And before people go like “but how come some shows in the 60’s were more extreme than today?” Let me remind you that those shows were syndicated and never meant to air on the networks. The Networks were under their own BSnP and the FCC’s. It continues to be that way.

The issue stems from a change in culture, which 4Kids and other companies got caught up in. This change didn’t start because of their editing – it started in spite of their editing. The US Animation dubbing industry felt that they could make more money because 4Kids showed them the way. What ended up was that the networks were not getting money (see the issue of the Cardcaptor series) from DVD sales, and stopped production of said series. The same industry, in other places were producing 2 episodes a DVD. Most of 4Kids and other DVD’s were 5 to 6 episodes a dvd disc.

This, along with issues concerning One Piece and the way it was perceived, broke the back of everybody involved. Plus, with the expansion of the Children’s TV Act of 1990 to include the DTV transition (small aside here, the only reason we had a DTV transition, was that particular law.) even 4Kids had to get E/I compliant shows.

But 4Kids did more than that. It did contests where others didn’t really care – it got stars from different walks of life when other companies didn’t. It did songs and covers that tried to show case something that it could be something joyful for the fans of some series to agree that it wasn’t going to be bad, it was going to bring everybody to the franchise (One Piece). And at its final days, it tried to reboot a whole industry caught up in such hubris that if it wasn’t for the return of Toonami back late last year,  would have been called the way its been called by certain fanbases in both the video game industry and other aspects of geekdom, a worse form of porn, to be made fun of – to be called trash and childlike.

4Kids gave – while others continue to take.

This leads into what is wrong with Saban’s Vortexx.

There is nothing new.

There is the use of stars, but there no where as big as their past versions (in Nascar, Pro Wrestling and Music to name a few)

They air shows that have already seen success in other networks and seen by larger audiences.

The thing that makes it worse, is the concept of the Vortexx approved bumper.

This is the worst thing, anyone has done. Its shows the lack of tact. The respect between what we know whats right and what is told whats right.

But this is Saban and his company for you. They go back to what used to work and failing because we are a completely different society than what we were in 1996.

Nick, CN and Disney (the latter slowly understanding) are starting to adjust to new models. They also have problems too.

But Saban didn’t understand then, when he lost Fox Kids Worldwide to the lucky plucky, 4Kids and Pokémon.

He will never understand now, as the whole TV world is changing forever.

That’s why I miss 4Kids. It was meant for the tykes and those at the cusp of the teen years.

And now its lost to the winds, of what it has done and what could have been.

Created and produced by Rainbow, the Winx Club animated series is currently going strong with its fifth season, and is backed by a wide range of movies, DVDs, apparel, books, and even video games.

Winx Club: Magical Fairy Party Launches for the Nintendo DS

D3Publisher has just released Winx Club: Magical Fairy Party for the Nintendo DS, with the game being made available for purchase in stores or online. The game’s launch is timely, as the upcoming Halloween will make for some dress-up fun as little gamers are given the chance to bring the fairies’ fantasy adventures to life with their portable handhelds.

In support of the release, the studio has released several Halloween themed screenshots for the fairies’ upcoming Halloween bash:

Winx Club: Magical Fairy Party Launches for the Nintendo DS

Based on the hit Nickelodeon series, Winx Club: Magical Fairy Party for the DS gives players the chance to go on adventures as their own custom made fairy, interact with familiar faces from the show and enroll in the enchanted Alfea School where they will plan fantastic events and perform spells to their hearts’ content.

Note that the release is technically for the Nintendo DS, but since the 3DS is backwards compatible, the game can be played even by people who have long since abandoned the Nintendo DS in favor of its newer, 3D-er brother.

New Winx Club Toys from JAKKS Pacific

JAKKS Pacific and its Creative Designs International (CDI) and Disguise Halloween divisions will launch a new line of dolls, playsets, accessories, dress-up, roleplay items and even Halloween cosumtes based on Nickelodeon’s animated modern fantasy adventure series, Winx Club.

Winx Club (also known in some areas as The Winx: Just Fairies) is a CG animated television series that is aimed towards children between ages of five and twelve, but over the years has also acquired a following from teens. The series follows the story of friends Bloom, Stella, Flora, Tecna, Musa, Layla, who live in the Magical Dimension and Earth. The group battles against darkness, discover new transformations, and unlock secrets and powers.

JAKKS Pacific, CDI, and Disguise have seen it fit to create more toys that will give young women a chance to create a beautiful assortment of role-play dresses and fairy wings, so that they can transform themselves into their favorite Winx Club Member. The first few toy lines will launch in Fall 2012, which will coincide with the premiere of the brand new CG episodes of the series on Nickelodeon.
