Cloudco Entertainment (formerly American Greetings) and Turner have unveiled Care Bears: Unlock the Magic, a new 2D-animated series headed to the Boomerang app and linear channel in the United States. Bringing the classic ’80s brand to the modern world, the show sports a road-trip theme that’ll see the citizens of Care-a-lot meet new creatures and employ their powers and wits like never before as they explore the previously unseen area around them called the “The Silver Lining.”

The new series will feature 48 x 11’ regular episodes, 2 x 22’ specials and 20 x :20 shorts designed to provide a special comedic focus on individual bears. While the brand has been refreshed for the modern day, fans should expect to see a number of homages to entries gone by, including the iconic “Care Bear Stare.”

Care Bears: Unlock the Magic will first debut on the Boomerang streaming app, with select episodes making their way onto the linear television channel in the months following their digital debut. Starting this month, Boomerang’s social media channels will reveal each of the lead Bears and reveal just what their life is like. Internationally, the series is expected the drop on Turner-owned broadcasters and Pop in the United Kindgom.
“We swung for the fences to give the bears the best and most compelling storytelling, animation and broadcaster home,” said Cloudco Entertainment President Sean Gorman. “I am super-proud of the result and thank our own internal team as well as our production partners for their immeasurable hard work and support.”
The Care Bears were originally introduced through greeting cards in 1981. The brand first made the leap to animation with 1983’s Atkinson Film-Arts-produced Land Without Feelings TV special. Another special arrived the following year, but 1985 was the property’s major push thanks to Nelvana’s The Care Bears Movie, which broke box office records for a non-Disney animated feature. The 1980s saw two television shows (one from DiC and later Nelvana), two more theatrical films and another TV special.
The Care Bears rose back to life in 2000s, through the help of two Nelvana CG-animated direct-to-video movies, the Adventures in Care-a-lot television series, and three more features from Sabella Dern. The bears and their cousins were last seen courtesy of MoonScoop’s Welcome to Care-a-Lot and Care Bears and Cousins series.
Cloudco is hoping the next generation of Care Bears can join that successful lineage. In addition to the new series, the company is also planning a hybrid live-action/CG-animated feature film with a major Hollywood studio.
