NYCC Interview: Man of Action Studios’ Steven T. Seagle, Duncan Rouleau and Joe Kelly

ToonBarn's Marc Morrell Interviews Man of Action Studios at New York Comic Con 2012

Man of Action Studios is the bi-coastal production company responsible for such megahits as the Ben 10 empire and Generator Rex on Cartoon Network, Marvel’s Ultimate Spider-Man for Disney XD, wildly successful video games, toy lines, comic books, graphic novels, stage productions, animation and a slew of upcoming feature films. They serve as front line creators, producers, writers and artists on many of their projects and are constantly creating more. A Man of Action is someone who gets things done. This perfectly describes each member of Man of Action Studios. Much like their super-powered protagonists existing across all platforms, Man of Action Studios is a creative collective that can generate and adapt ideas into the highest-rated television shows and best-selling merchandise in the US and around the world.

Who are the men behind Man of Action Studios? I am glad you asked. Man of Action Studios began in 2000 as a group of four friends from diverse backgrounds: Duncan Rouleau, Joe Casey, Joe Kelly and Steven T. Seagle, all graphic novelists with a strong appreciation for structure and storytelling, who wanted to do something bigger.

When Rex and Ben became Heroes United

When Rex and Ben became Heroes United

OK, it’s now all said and done. Man of Action studios and Cartoon Network brought their A-Game, and the result was an amazing one hour special where two of our favorite super heroes shared the same screen for Ben 10 / Generator Rex: Heroes United. After months of hype and hours of waiting impatiently at our TVs, we can all finally breathe a sigh of relief… that is, until we dig ourselves back in, and revisit everything! First and foremost, and of special interest within this topic, we wanted to review how the special explored both characters, and each of their respective origin stories. What was it like for Ben and Rex not just before they were united, but before they were the heroes we know them to be?

On Friday, November 25th, Cartoon Network introduced a game changer: Ben 10 / Generator Rex: Heroes United, an hour-long special event of out-of-this-world proportions! The special brought Ben Tennyson of Ben 10 fame over to the universe of Rex Salazar, of Generator Rex fame. There was a smash up, a team up, and then a battle to end all battles with the malevolent Alpha Nanite; an evil, twisted mirror of the Nanites that Rex utilizes for all of his builds. For months we’ve been waiting to watch. For hours we’ve been watching, rewatching, and reviewing what we’ve just seen. So what’s the final verdict? Who won? Will there be another? And, overall, how did we rate Heroes United?

Ben, meet Rex. Rex, meet Ben. For the past few months, we’ve been really digging into what would happen if these two ever met – and for the past few weeks, we’ve started to see images and video of what will happen when they do. From what we can tell, we know there’s going to be a misunderstanding. We know that they’re going to battle it out, to see which one of them would win in a fight. What we haven’t really understood yet is, what they’re going to do once the fighting between the two Man of Action, Cartoon Network super stars is complete. In other words, who is the villain (or villains) that they’ll be faced up against? Who, really, is powerful enough to battle not just Ben 10, but Generator Rex and the Agents of Providence? How about this creepy guy, named Alpha!

Prepare for a Big Chill on Black Friday

Prepare for a Big Chill on Black Friday

Sorry, Rex, but it looks like Ben ate well enough this past Thanksgiving to bring all of his alien friends into your universe! When it hits 7pm this November 25th on Cartoon Network, Ben Tennyson and Rex Salazar meet for the very first time in the one hour, special presentation of Ben 10 / Generator Rex: Heroes United. All week long, we’ve been getting a special look at what the battle has in store for us, and one thing has become very clear: there’s lots of alien forms! We know that Humungousaur is the first to show his (humongous) face, and later learned that Diamondhead would be crashing the party as well. With all the action heating up, don’t you just wish for a nice, big chill…? Or how about a not-so-nice Big Chill!

Needless to say, we’re a bit excited for the premiere. I mean, c’mon! It’s both of Man of Action’s biggest superstars, Ben Tennyson and Rex Salazar, teaming up and… well, also beating each other senseless. Of course, we have to see who would win in a fight, right?

Cartoon crossovers, ala Heroes United

The upcoming Ben 10 Ultimate Alien and Generator Rex crossover has everyone super hyped up. We’ve been adding new coverage of the special event as often as possible, simply because its just too ‘dern awesome looking. In addition to it just being a cool, brand new episode, its just a sweet concept to see two entirely different shows colliding in a single format. With that in mind, we wanted to take a look back into some of the other more famous cartoon matchups, teamups, crossovers, mix-n-matches, and… squish-together-ers!

Actually, that’s not true, at all… we’re excited for both! …Maybe THEY, too, should crossover, in some sorta …Thanksmas? ….Ahh, forget it.
