DreamWorks Animation pairs Kung Fu Panda with Youku in China

The Kung Fu Panda series has been among DreamWorks’ most popular and successful films, entertaining U.S. audiences to the tune of $380 million at the box office. Focusing on many Asian themes, for example… you know… Kung Fu, the film has an obvious following in Mainland China, at least for those who were able to see it. In order to help on the quest, Youku, one of China’s online TV companies, has worked a deal with DreamWorks Animation to distribute Paramount’s Kung Fu Panda and Kung Fu Panda 2 across China via the Youku Premium on-demand service. Bring it on, Po!

This weekend is Labor Day weekend here in the States, which means a lot of good relaxing, BBQ food, and the final, unofficial send-off to the warm Summer season. Here at the ToonBarn Studios, as much as we love building snow forts in January, losing out on our beach-going hot days is a little upsetting. In fact, it’s a little MADdening. Thankfully, Cartoon Network has tapped into that energy, with a brand new episode of MAD just waiting for us on Labor Day Monday, September 5th. At 8:30PM, be sure to check out Alfred E. Neuman’s latest creation, Kung-Fu Blander / Destroy Bob the Builder Destroy.

DreamWorks Animation to bring Shreks, Dragons, and Pandas to Netflix?

DreamWorks Animation to bring Shreks, Dragons, and Pandas to Netflix?

In a major mingling of the entertainment brands, DreamWorks Animation and Netflix are working on a deal that would give Netflix the exclusive streaming rights to every movie from the DreamWorks studio. Currently, that deal is in place between DreamWorks and HBO, but Netflix could take over for HBO, and the foreseeable future – and soon! That would mean every Shrek, every How to Train Your Dragon, Kung-Fu Panda, Puss in Boots, Megamind, Madagascar, Monsters vs. Aliens, and all titles we don’t even know about yet (Bee movie 2??). Time to queue some flicks up, and get to streaming!

Pixar’s Cars 2 has Disney’s Brightest Day

Pixar's Cars 2 has Disney's Brightest Day

This past weekend saw Cars 2 drive to the top spot at the box office. The CG Disney film was the fifth highest-ever opening weekend for a Pixar movie, behind Toy Story 3, The Incredibles, Finding Nemo, and Up – meaning only Toy Story 3 had a more successful opening weekend for a sequel. Pulling in $68 million, Cars 2 even topped the original Cars’ box office, $60 million, a few years ago. Falling, steeply, from first to third was DC Comics comic book super hero film, Green Lantern, as the Emerald Knight couldn’t find steady footing. The X-Men held on, as did Kung Fu Panda, as the animated universe does what it can to impress the world as we know it. Check out the full box office breakdown, and let us know where your tickets went!

Green Lantern wills the box office top spot

Green Lantern wills the box office top spot

One weekend in, and the Emerald Knight has already soared to the top of the box office. At just under $53 million dollars, the Green Lantern topped the weekend list, dethroning last week’s champ, Super 8, new comer Mr. Popper’s Penguins, and fellow super hero flick, X-Men: First Class. GL is the third DC Comics hero to hit the big screen in the past few years, following in the footsteps of Batman and Superman, and hoping to carve out a nice franchise of his own. To help in that conquest, DC Entertainment brought the comic book hero to animated life in Emerald Knights a few weeks back, and Cartoon Network will see a Green Lantern Animated Series launch next year. In Brightest Day, In Blackest Night! Take a look at the full box office from this past weekend

Disney, Marvel’s X-Men: First Class tops box office

Disney, Marvel's X-Men: First Class tops box office

In it’s first weekend to theaters, X-Men: First Class took the top spot from contenders like The Hangover Part II and Nickelodeons Kung Fu Panda sequel, Kung Fu Panda 2. Disney’s movie about Marvel’s Mutants took home $56 million in the three day span, an impressive start, though about $30 million shy of the last film in the franchise, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which clawed $85 million. As the world of super heroes across the Marvel universe slowly creep their way into film, largely anticipating a mass crossover with next years Avengers, it’s good to see that the original super team of mutants can hold their own. Kung Fu Panda 2 chops low for DreamWorks

Kung Fu Panda 2 chops low for DreamWorks

It’s tough to imagine that earning $50 million dollars in a three day span (or $65 million in a 5 day span) could somehow be viewed as a bummer. But, that’s the box offices films face today, where Kung Fu Panda 2 did just that. The sequel to DreamWorks Animations 2008 juggernaut had a mighty first effort, but not strong enough to tackle another sequel, The Hangover Part II. Frankly, we think the CG and 3D film did well, even if it is currently being outpaced by the original. As long as it gave us something to laugh at, and something to look forward to in the upcoming Nickelodeon series, we were happy. What about you guys, did you get a chance to hit the theaters this week? How did you fit in the box office breakdown?

Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness chops Nickelodeon

Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness chops Nickelodeon

In an effort to crank up both their animated attack, as well as their Saturday Morning block, Nickelodeon has big plans for Kung-Fu Panda. The DreamWorks CG blockbuster made huge waves at the box office, with more of the same planned for the sequel (The Kaboom of Doom), and Nick is hoping to cash in on that success with the animated series, Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness. Noting the partnership’s success with The Penguins of Madagascar, Nickelodeon has big plans for the series, and has already crafted 52 episodes. The adventure will follow Po, now a Master, living in the barracks with the Furious Five in the Valley of Peace, continuing his education and adventures of the Dragon Warrior. Kung Fu Panda 2 Super Bowl Spot

Kung Fu Panda 2 Super Bowl Spot

May 26th is going to change things. At least as far as animals with martial arts training go. Whatwever the case, it’s on that date of this year that DreamWorks will release Kung Fu Panda 2: The Kaboom of Doom, the CG sequel to 2008’s original Kung Fu Panda. And the film got the biggest official nod one could get, with it’s very own commercial spot during Super Bowl XLV. Now a kung fu master, Po will fight alongside Master Shifu and The Furious Five (Monkey, Crane, Tigress, Viper, and Mantis) to defeat Lord Shen. But the group wont be alone, teaming with Thundering Rhino, Soothsayer, and Croc to tackle the evil emperor peacock. You hear that, NBC! Check out the spot, and the official trailer!

Nickelodeon readies Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness

Nickelodeon readies Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness

Po has his training cut out for him. Not only does he have to get ready for the Kung Fu Panda sequel, the Kaboom of Doom (set to hit theaters May 27th, 2011), but now the Panda has an ongoing series to concentrate on, too! The newest hero in the Valley of Peace is now living in the barracks with the Furious Five, ready to take on his many new responsibilities, his many new adversaries, and his many old pounds in the continuing education and adventures of the Dragon Warrior. The DreamWorks Animation series is now at work for Nickelodeon’s network, featuring a number of well known stars in the voice cast. The hope is that this series will have the same success that the Madagascar spin-off had, in The Penguins of Madagascar.
