Sony Co-Chair Hints at Future Spin-Off Films for Spider-Man

Sony Co-Chair Hints at Future Spin-Off Films for Spider-Man

With comic book movie adaptations being the flavor of the month (or decade, considering how long it’s been going on), it’s no surprise that Sony already has two sequels to The Amazing Spider-Man in the pipeline. After all, they probably learned their lesson from Fox’s mistake of letting several of their licenses to Marvel properties lapse. However, what’s interesting is that Sony may be going further than mere sequels, as Sony Co-Chair Amy Pascal has recently revealed to investors that a series of spin-off projects may soon be on the horizon.

Amazing Spider-Man 2 Viral Campaign Hints at New Villains

the daily bugle tease

There are currently two commonly used types of viral campaign strategy for movies on the net right now: the first one insults your intelligence, while the second one effectively piques your curiosity and extends the narrative of the film beyond the medium. We’re glad that Sony’s approach with Amazing Spider-Man 2 is the second one.

Amazing Spider-Man 2’s most recent piece of viral marketing is a faux news article on the Daily Bugle website that reads as follows:

ToonBarn was at San Diego Comic-Con on July 21 and stopped by the Man of Action Studios Booth to talk to the creators of Ben 10. These talented writers and animators are also Executive Producers for two shows at Marvel: Avengers Assemble and Ultimate Spider-Man.

Joe Kelly, one of the foursome that makes up the founding members of Man of Action Studios, was not present for this interview, but we may get a chance to talk to him at New York Comic Con. In the following video, we do get to hear from Steven T. Seagle, Joe Casey, and Duncan Rouleau.

Iconic comic book creator Stan Lee is pretty much a staple in Marvel’s big screen properties, doing cameos in some of the biggest movie adaptation of the comic book companies’ titles, and in some movies that are only slightly related to the medium (such as a number of Kevin Smith’s films). This August, Stan “The Man” Lee will be reprising yet another of his Marvel roles as Stan the Janitor returns in a new episode of “Marvel’s Ultimate Spider-Man.”

Marvel’s Comic Con slate included the announcement that Disney XD has ordered a third season for their critically acclaimed animated series Ultimate Spider-Man, which focuses on the adventures of the friendly neighborhood wall-crawler and four other teen heroes who have joined S.H.I.E.L.D.’s exclusive superhero training program.

The 3rd season of Ultimate Spider-Man is said to feature Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, and Hulk as Spidey has been asked to become an Avenger. This is fortunate for Spider-Man, as he’s going to face new deadlier villains and will need all the help he can get.

NYCC Interview: Man of Action Studios’ Steven T. Seagle, Duncan Rouleau and Joe Kelly

ToonBarn's Marc Morrell Interviews Man of Action Studios at New York Comic Con 2012

Man of Action Studios is the bi-coastal production company responsible for such megahits as the Ben 10 empire and Generator Rex on Cartoon Network, Marvel’s Ultimate Spider-Man for Disney XD, wildly successful video games, toy lines, comic books, graphic novels, stage productions, animation and a slew of upcoming feature films. They serve as front line creators, producers, writers and artists on many of their projects and are constantly creating more. A Man of Action is someone who gets things done. This perfectly describes each member of Man of Action Studios. Much like their super-powered protagonists existing across all platforms, Man of Action Studios is a creative collective that can generate and adapt ideas into the highest-rated television shows and best-selling merchandise in the US and around the world.

Who are the men behind Man of Action Studios? I am glad you asked. Man of Action Studios began in 2000 as a group of four friends from diverse backgrounds: Duncan Rouleau, Joe Casey, Joe Kelly and Steven T. Seagle, all graphic novelists with a strong appreciation for structure and storytelling, who wanted to do something bigger.

In order to put a restriction on the grosses of foreign movies, China Film Group has chosen to open Sony’s The Amazing Spider-Man on the same day as Warner Bros.’ The Dark Knight Rises last Monday, August 17 in China. While both comic book-based movies fared well on the box office, it is interesting to note that Spider-Man managed to outdo The Dark Knight Rises with its $5.46 million cume, compared to the Dark Knigth’s $4.45 million.
