Spider-Woman, salute to Marvel's past

In just one week, on June 14th, Marvel Knights Animation and Shout! Factory will team to release the latest comic book to DVD title in their lineup, Spider-Woman: Agent of S.W.O.R.D.. In honor of this event, we here at ToonBarn wanted to remind everyone that, even though this will be an awesome animated journey through the life of Spider-Woman, that our girl Jessica Drew actually has a long history of cartooning! In fact, over 30 years ago, Marvel Comics Animation teamed with DePatie-Freleng Enterprises to produce the Spider-Woman animated series on ABC. The series had a brief run (only about 4 months) but was is one of those iconic memories that we’re happy to share. Check out a clip and see if you can spot some of the differences between this Spider-Woman and the modern day take!

Jessica is not alone in Marvel’s Spider-Woman: Agent of S.W.O.R.D. DVD

Jessica is not alone in Marvel's Spider-Woman: Agent of S.W.O.R.D. DVD

Facing a Skrull is pretty rough. But being replaced on earth by Skrull Queen Veranke, then facing an entire Skrull invasion in an effort to set things right, that could seem like a bit much. Thankfully, Jessica Drew, aka Spider-Woman, doesn’t have to tackle the entire challenge on her own. In the upcoming DVD Spider-Woman: Agent of S.W.O.R.D., due out June 14th, Marvel Knights Animation teams with Shout! Factory to present a brand new comic-to-DVD production. Along for the ride to help Spider-Woman in her quest is an entire collection of other Marvel Super Heroes, including the Avengers, Wolverine, Black Widow, Captain America, Ms. Marvel, and of course, Spider-Man. Check out the teaser trailer

Marvel Comics gets new Spider-Man to replace Peter Parker

Marvel Comics gets new Spider-Man to replace Peter Parker

Geez, it’s just not an easy time to be Spider-Man. First, Broadway announces the (temporary?) closing of Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark. Now, Marvel seems to have had their fill of Peter Parker as the lead character all together! Starting with Ultimate Spider-Man issue 160, someone new will be wearing the Spider-Man costume. In fact, someone new will be wearing something new, as the whole Spidey suit gets an update. The sleek black and red design was just recently revealed, ready to put into practice this summer after issue 159’s “Death of Spider-Man” storyline. Yeesh! So who is the new wall crawler, web-slinger, man behind the mask? It’s a mystery, so far. As is the future of the classic Spidey, Peter Parker.

Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark turns dark

Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark turns dark

Maybe it was the Green Goblin. Maybe it was due to the dozens of accidents. Heck, maybe the cast is just afraid of being devoured whole by partially untrained dragons. The true answers may never surface, but the fact remains: Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark is closing. At least for now. During this past weekend’s show, the cast took a final bow as curtains closed, letting producers, including U2’s Bono and The Edge, and a new creative team have some time to overhaul and fix the show. Everyone involved hopes to have previews ready to go May 12th, with a relaunch on June 14th at the Foxwoods Theater. Technically, the show has still never opened, airing only previews since November of 2010. Maybe one day, Peter Parker. Maybe one day.

DreamWorks takes How to Train Your Dragon to Broadway?

DreamWorks takes How to Train Your Dragon to Broadway?

Last year’s CG animated movie, How To Train Your Dragon, was one of the best films we’d seen in awhile. The folks at DreamWorks Animation clearly agreed, as they’ve already begun the process to franchise the title, churning out an upcoming sequel in the next few years, as well as an animated series based on the films, set to hit Nickelodeon before you know it. But what we didn’t know is that DreamWorks Animations CEO, Jeffrey Katzenberg, also has plans to turn the flick into a live show! After both Shrek and then Spider-Man took their turn at the stage, do you have room in your hearts to see Dragons and Vikings marching down Broadway?

On June 14th, Marvel Knights Animation will team with Shout! Factory to present the story of Spider-Woman. It is then that Jessica finds that the urge within herself to inflict vengeance upon the Skrulls is too overwhelming to deny. Now, it’s time for Spider-Woman to find her replacement, the Skrull Queen Veranke, and prevent another Skrull invasion. This tale, created by Brian Michael Bendis and Alex Maleev, features guest appearances by Spider-Man, the Avengers, Wolverine, Black Widow, Captain America and Ms. Marvel.

Sneak Peek at Marvel’s The Ultimate Spider-Man

The Ultimate Spider-Man

At C2E2 2011, Spidey has taken a starring role. Not just the latest comic book adventures, and not just with the upcoming film relaunch – Marvel’s Web Head is jumping into an all new animated series, The Ultimate Spider-Man, and the lucky folks in attendance were able to get the first glimpse sneak peek of the toon in action. Thankfully, we had a few well planted ToonBarn spies in the audience, ready to bring you the visuals of the Man of Action series, whose producers include comic book legends like Paul Dini, Jeph Loeb, and Brian Michael Bendis. We’ve got J. Jonah Jameson continuing his campaign against Spider-Man, Mary Jane Watson hard at work, and Spidey addressing crimes in the Marvel icon’s typical fashion. With great power comes great responsibility, both of which lead to great animation. Check it out!
