Day & Night comes home with Toy Story 3

Toy Story 3 can, and likely will, be yours. Not in years, months, or weeks. Not even really in days anymore. At this point, we’re talking “hours”. The Blu-ray and DVD packages come hit stores November 2nd, giving you all the Pixar and Disney joy at home. But along with the spectacular sequel in the CG franchise, the movie also packs in the latest animated short, Day & Night, shown prior to the feature in theaters. This particular short actually received nearly as many nods and kudos as the film, itself, using all new story telling and cinematic techniques to bring the feature to life. Take a look at the following Q&A with the director, Teddy Newton, for a behind-the-scenes insider look at the piece, with all the neat little Pixar Easter Eggs!

Looks… familiar? I mean, close, but not really? You can sorta see Andy and Buzz Lightyear, Woody, Jessie, Rex, Bullseye, Hamm, and a few others from Disney and Pixar’s Toy Story franchise, but the detail is certainly much less CG than we’re used to. That’s because this is the concept art phase of the film’s development. Months after the hand-drawn sketches take us through the basics of the story, individual scenes are fleshed out with color in these rendered paintings, giving all of the digital artists a proper sense of what to create. The lighting, the mood, the frame cropping, etc. And guess what; there’s tons of this content, all happily packed in the Blu-ray and DVD combo packs, due in stores November 2nd. Check out some more!

Disney and Pixar’s Toy Story 3 is available on Blu-ray and DVD on November 2nd. Before the movie arrived home in neato little packages, the film was in theaters. Before that, it was being rendered and digitized at the various Disney offices and headquarters. And before that, the 3D and CG rendered gorgeous piece of artwork that we know as the completed Toy Story adventure was just a mere collection of marker-and-paper drawings. As the creative folks behind the film sat down together, it was their job to put everything in place. Make sure the story worked, had all the characters fully developed, and told the tale they wanted to tell. In that process, they use a technique called “storyboarding”, where there are sketches of key moments in the film placed in the order that they happen. The home versions will go into a bit more detail on this, but in the meantime, check out some of these exclusive shots right here.

Pixar's Toy Story 3 earns Disney another spot in the $1 billion club

Not only are the toys back in town, the toys are in the money! Just last week, Pixar’s Toy Story 3 became the highest grossing animated film of all time, besting DreamWorks Animations’ Shrek 2. A few weeks before that, the Disney film crossed the $400 million dollar mark. Now, the box office receipts make it official, as Toy Story 3 moves into the incredibly exclusive $1 billion dollar club. Ignoring the concept of inflation, there are only 6 other movies in this famous grouping, which helps set Toy Story 3 aside as one of the greatest films and accomplishments of all time – just edging out Batman’s The Dark Knight. With the third, and reportedly final installment in the trilogy, the Toy Story franchise will forever be known as one of the most successful. Take a look at the rest of the list

Use your mouse. Use your brain. Use your …bridge! Remember the opening moments of Toy Story 3, when Buzz, Jessie, and Woody did their best to escape the clutches of Mr. Potato Head and his millions of monkeys? Well, much of that scene depended upon the gang saving the train, barreling it’s way towards a bridge-less gap. Imagine how much easier that would have been if you could drag and drop objects, like in this game, to create a clear path for the train to travel across safely. Live the Pixar adventure, and re-write the opening train scene to Disney’s latest epic in this game
