The Smurfs top Cowboys and Aliens, Captain America at the box office

At first thought, you probably wouldn’t think there’s anything similar between lil blue critters, space aliens, old western cowboys, and patriotic super soldiers. And yet, all of them crammed into the top three spots at the box office this weekend. Captain America: The First Avenger took third in the group with $25 million, and the other two films, Cowboys & Aliens and The Smurfs, each raked in more than $36 million in their premiere weekends. Sure, there was still a Harry Potter and a Transformers in there, but there’s three new bosses on top. Any of this ticket money belong to you?

Captain America: The First Avenger to the box office

Next summer is going to be very crowded with Marvel’s comic book super heroes. When The Avengers film hits theaters, we’ll have Thor, Iron Man, Hawkeye, and a whole slew of other Disney icons ready to battle anything that comes their way. But their story wont be contained just in the single film; rather, we’ve had Nick Fury recruiting the cast for some time now, with some of those folks already appearing in their own films. And now, Cap officially kicks off the saga with the newest Marvel film, Captain America: The First Avenger, which opened in first place this past weekend, with $65 million to it’s name, besting the opening to DC Comics’ Green Lantern movie from a few weeks back, and even topping Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2. Who joined in to see Captain America on the big screen so far? And who will be heading there this week?

Atlas forms Voltron: Defender of the Universe movie

Atlas forms Voltron: Defender of the Universe movie

Mega thrusters are go! Voltron has long since been an amazingly popular animated franchise, ever since the transforming and merging Team Lion became a fixture of cartoons in the 1980s. Nickelodeon’s Nicktoons recently jumped on that lion-bandwagon, reviving the team once more for the animated series Voltron Force. Now, Atlas Entertainment and World Events Productions (WEP) have bigger ideas for the future, planning a Voltron: Defender of the Universe movie! The iconic figures, based on the original Japanese anime and manga Beast King GoLion and Kikou Kantai Dairugger XV, have only just begun their journey to the silver screen, with a planned hybrid mixture of live action and CG animation – likely not dissimilar from the recent Transformers blockbusters, like Dark of the Moon, that have so captured the imagination of audiences everywhere.

Captain America: The First Avenger in theaters today

Captain America: The First Avenger in theaters today

The long wait is finally over; Captain America is back in theaters. Now, we say “back” loosely, as his previous stint starring Matt Salinger isn’t all that memorable, outside of comedy. Chris Evans hopes to reverse the tide, using the mighty of Marvel and Disney to bring The First Avenger to prominence. Theaters are already a bit crowded, with Transformers: Dark of the Moon still riding high, and the phenomenal success of HP7, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, but Cap will look to carve his own territory. Anyone ToonBarners seeing it tonight?

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows box office magic

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows box office magic

It seems like just a few weeks ago, you couldn’t see any other movie besides Transformers, as the latest sequel, Dark of the Moon, dominated the box office. In fact, that was only a few weeks ago! Now, every screen is all about Harry Potter, as the franchise pumps out the final presentation, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2. Transformers was big, but HP7 is now on a pace to become the biggest of all time, besting The Dark Knight with the largest opening weekend box office ever.

Transformers Prime and Transformers Generation 1 dominate the Hub

Transformers Prime and Transformers Generation 1 dominate the Hub

Two shall stand and ratings shall rise! During America’s birthday, The Hub threw together a great party by featuring some of their largest icons, the Transformers. In an event they dubbed Trans4th of July, the network showcased a marathon that went back and forth (4th!) between Transformers Prime, the new CG animated toon that runs on their channel, and Transformers G1, the original 1980s Generation 1 toon that started the whole franchise. The result? One of the biggest ratings days in the short history of the network, tripling the audience versus the previous week. Were you amongst the millions that watched? And do you prefer the old school toon, or the new age animation?

There’s just something magical about the mix of Transformers and the July 4th holiday! In addition to the marathon on the Hub, and ToonBarn’s own Transformers Headmasters DVD giveaway, the newest sequel in the Transformers movie franchise absolutely dominated theaters this past weekend. The film pulled in just shy of 100 million during the regular weekend, and has raked in 162 million since opening in the middle of last week, setting all kinds of records, including the top opener for a July 4th holiday weekend, knocking Spider-Man 2 out of the top spot. With monster numbers like that, it’s likely you’ll have a number of weeks to see Transformers 3 in theaters, again and again, in 3D and 2D.

After waiting decades, loyal fans in North America can finally bring home NEW episodes of the original Transformers animated series from the 1980s. How so? Over in Japan, the original cartoon didn’t end where it ended for Americans. Rather, the story continued for another few seasons, in a collection referred to as Generation 1: Headmasters. Shout! Factory and Hasbro are now bringing these episodes home to DVD in a collection dubbed Transformers: The Japanese Collection: Headmasters. The 4 DVD box set contains the complete additional episodes with original Japanese language tracks (and English subtitles) as well as a number of bonus features.

Transformers Season 4 may have ended the American series of Transformers Generation 1 back in the 1980s, but Japan had many more stories to tell! Instead of the 4th season of Gen One as Americans knew it, the Japanese replaced the storyline with Transformers: Headmasters, beginning one year after the end of Season 3. Optimus Prime lives again, the energy of the Matrix has been released, and peace reigns on Cybertron. But all of this is soon to change, with the startling arrival of the newest bred of Transformers warrior – the Headmasters! The result is a few dozen “new” episodes of the G1 Transformers that most have never seen – that is, until July 5th, when Hasbro and Shout! Factory bring the Transformers: The Japanese Collection Headmasters DVD box set to stores!
